Hi, my brother and I want to start otr trucking. We don't know if it would be better to go to school, or buy our own truck and learn to drive. I live in western Oregon, and the only truck school around here, I know of is IITR. I've also looked into going to a school like swift or some other company. Does anyone have any ideas? I already have a class B cdl so I can drive my churches bus. any info would be greatly apreciated.

I learned by going out with a driver in a company program and it made it very difficult on me.

I think you should really consider a formal program that can teach you how to log and trip plan and all that. Set yourself up for success, especially if you plan to operate your own business at some point.

I was fortunate that I drove team with a very experienced and professional driver right out of training, or I would have had a tough time as a newbie.

i also agree with fretless. i learned on my own, and most anyone can learn to drive the truck in a week or two. the rest comes hard if you have to pick it up a piece at a time, and sift the wrong ways out. i work small co. and local, so i get by ok. otr would be trying to say the least, if you go off half ####ed.
