Hi,
I'm from Maryland and have been considering becoming a truck driver for many years.
I would like to know if it is better to pay for a career institute such as All State Career School or is it just as good to apply for a job with a large company for on the job training?
Any insight is appreciated.
Thanks!
JD

Most companies require their students to have a combination of both. For instance, many training companies offer schooling then they put you out with a trainer for around 20,000 miles before they sign you off as certified to be own your own.
I think that's the best way .. -
New Career, hey.... I'd stay away from Allstate Career. They say they are PTDI certified school, however, it is a 6 month school and will cost around 9K. That is ridiculous amount of $$ for school. Harford Community College has partnered with Cecil Community College and its an 6 week course and costs 4125. Much better than 9K and better student to teacher/trainer ratio.
As for me, I am thinking of going with Prime. I don't have the funds avail to attend school and Prime to me from what I read about the other training companies is the best fit for me..... By no means am I telling you what to do. Look around on this site. Lots of great and useful information. Make the best decision possible that fits your needs and lifestyle. Good luck. -

The best advice is call the companies like I did. Ask the recruiters honest and point blank questions. Yes, it is the recruiters job to sell the company, however, be smart about it. Really research this Trucking Forum.... lots of questions have been asked and answered. Be true to yourself and determine what is best for you in the long run. To be successful you have to trust yourself and put forth the effort. Thats all I can say.... good luck. -

Thanks for all the comments!
I spoke with Allstate Career to do some legwork and they sound like a boiler room full of sales people not a school and 9k is hard to swallow.
I'm gonna keep researching this site and others. Good luck to everyone in their endeavors.

I have specifically asked 4 different company recruiters so far and each one of them said certificate of completion from my local community college ($1400) and CDL would be fine if my past isn't crap, I'm not a complete goober and can make it through their training. For 9k I'm gonna want some really special/maybe illegal personal services
