i was trained at a truck driving school only to find out after graduation that my dui was not as old as i thought! It will be five years old in may of this year but i have already been out of school too long. i am afraid that i will forget everything i learned. does anyone know of a decent company that takes dui/ovi drivers?

it is best you make up a list of companies you wish to apply to, then check out their websites. they should all mention the time frame of this. however too, you probably will need to go back to school for a full refresher course as you say you have been out of school "too long".....

let us know what information you came across, and we can go from there.

There are some websites that you can go to that lists different trucking companies for your state, and they will usually tell you what their rules are. You can also do what Rerun8963 said and just make a list up of companies. If you have any questions from there, there are plenty of people that will help you out.

Aint that a shame. That school screwed you hard. They know no one will hire you but dont care. They got your money. You got your CDL and then see ya! They could care less that you cant get a job. What people forget is that these schools are a bussiness and they exisist to make a profit. All they care about is your money and nothing else. A good school would have told you to wait till at least the 5 year point if not longer. You didnt find a good school or at least an honest one. Sorry you had to find out the hard way. The school you went to just took your money. They new you wouldnt be able to get a job.
Their are some large companies that will accept a DUI/DWI at 5 years but I think most are 7 to 10 years. Some are still none ever. My sugestion to you is to look for very small outfits. The mom and pop type. Construction companies that have their own trucks. Even small excavating companies. They may not care as much. Pay may not be great but at least you will be getting some experance. Also do your home work on the larger companies that will take a DUI/DWI at five years and ask them. You never know. You may need a refresher course that you will need to pay for but in the long run it may be worth it.
It wont be easy but I think if you are presistant you will find something. Buy the way dont ever get a nother one or you will never drive a truck ever!

I really think I'd go talk to a lawyer! In fact call OOIDA and talk to them. You're not a member BUT I think they just might want to hear about this school. In fact why don't you put the name out there and maybe save some other with a DUI from making the same mistake as you did. To tell the truth IMHO any school that would do this might not be "teaching" a very good course! Just taking the money and getting you just enough "smarts" to pass the tests!

Try a small company, perhaps o/o with a few trucks. If you explain your situation upfront, he/she may be willing to overlook the DUI - as long as it doesn't cause too much of a spike in their insurance they may just give you a shot...

On a riskier note, some of the smaller companies may not even check your driving record, especially since you are just starting out they may assume you have a "clean slate", and never know about the DUI. If your a good driver, dependable, etc. - it may never matter much.

I do not condone lying or misinforming prospective employers. But as long as you are not a prolific drunk driver, endangering the public nearly everytime you are behind the wheel - I think you should at least be given a chance; people make mistakes, and they should be allowed to redeem themselves, work and become productive contributors to society. A DUI doesn't make you a bad person, just made a poor choice and was caught. I'm sure many on here have driven after consuming alcohol - I don''t mean during work or in a CMV - but in your personal vehicle, I know I have.

But ultimately it's about cost, and being deemed "high risk" and costing much more to insure for companies will be your biggest obstacle. Good Luck.

given the facts that many smaller companies have been burnt by so-called "assuming", i am not so sure even the smallest company will not check the MVR, as sometimes many smaller companies do not buy the mvr, they tell YOU to bring a current copy.....i can't tell you how many "help wanted ads" i see where they want the applicant to provide an mvr usually no more than 3 months old, some want no more than 30 DAYS old........

best he just tells the truth....he might do ok with truth over lying or hiding...

I don't see where the school's at fault...this guy had a DUI, and doesn't know how long ago it was? Two problems right there in that one sentence.

He went ahead and signed up; that was his decision. Maybe he should have done his homework first.

the schools are REQUIRED to run a DMV and DAC check on students......BEFORE they sign any papers. if the student forgets the time line, the school would have known......the school (and this is even surmising they actually DID the background checks on him) WERE RESPONSIBLE TO INFORM HIM of a possible problem with his driving record.....to obtain a job...

now from MY perspective, one of two things....

    1) they DID the background check and TOLD him, and he simply forgot...

    2) THEY NEVER DID the checking.......

if number 2....the school shirked its responsibility to the student.....

if number 1....he is human and forgot, BUT he could have still gone back to the school and gotten a copy of his MVR from them........so shame on him for not doing that...????
