Hey all. When taking a cursory look at google and making some calls, there don't seem to be many trucker schools here. JB Hunt listed several schools they're affiliated with; the closest is about 200 miles away. The closest Swift school is in Tennessee (doesn't sound bad actually). So I figured I'd ask you guys who to call or where to look before wasting too much time. Thanks.

PS: Does this seem scammy to you guys? http://pam.greatcdltraining.com/landing.aspx?source=GAWSINEXPTHUDS&gclid=CLzukd-c7KYCFSRe7AodFUshCQ

hey i would recommend looking into the cdl program at metropolitan community college in independence. i went there and the instructor's are top notch. if you go there, take it seriously, and show them u want to learn, they really go out of their way. they dont just teach you what u need to know to pass the test. they go above and beyond to prepare you for bein on the road

its expensive tho. talk to them if money is an issue, there are a lot of options to help with tuition.

heres a link to the program

I don't know if you're looking into schools still but they have a Roadmasters school here in KC and I advise to stay FAR FAR FAR away from them. I went to their weekend class and luckily I smelled BS before getting traped into having to pay for the whole course. The instructor was a joke and only interested in flirting with the lone female of the group. The other guy would pretty much shake his head in disgust if you werent catching on to the shifting pattern and would kick you out of the seat and let someone else take over. It was a mess, maybe you would have better luck taking the regular weekday class. I was part of the first weekend group they ever had there and it was ran more like a circus then a class.

I then went to the Fort Scott community college in KCK. That was a a lot more better run school. The head guy Jim I believe was his name was a cranky old hard ### but he ran a tight ship and everything was serious. You didn't show up late. You always were showered and had on clean clothes. And don't you dare let a drop off piss hit the floor at the urinal or he would stop the class to yell at everybody about being a slob. And absolutely no cussing while in the class room! Anyway I was on the MO side, cant tell you to much about the Kansas instructor but the MO instructor was a pretty good guy and gave his students more "real life" training then the Kansas instructor from what I heard. He took us out in rush hour traffic. In town driving, small back roads and even let us go gas up. Towards the end we all got pretty good, where all my problems were though was learning to back up. To this day I'm sure whenever my instructor thinks back on me he probably thinks "why couldn't that ####### just get it?!?!?" :biggrin_25523:

However due to some personal conflicts and money issues going on in my life at that time I had to drop out of the program right at the end and never did go get my CDL. If I had to do it all over again I would go back to that school. However I hear the best place to go is the Metropolitan Community College. The guy who was my instructor at FSCC also teaches there and I remember talking to him once and asking what school he said was best and he said he liked MCC slightly more becuase there you get a lot more 1 on 1 training as opposed to having several other guys cramed in the truck with you at the same time. And when I finally have things settled away and can get back to school that's where I'm going.
