Does anyone have experience with the new SCR systems? I'm looking at a 2010 Volvo 780 with the D-16 engine but am concerned about the problems with the 2009 units with strictly EGR. Opinions are OK, but particularly looking for experience.
Most of the problem have been worked out on them as they have been in production for 6 months now. Most of the time when you get a fault lamp it is due to a faulty sensor. Don't put anything in the DEF tank except DEF as you will get all kinds of faults for it. I haven't really noticed any problems with the egr valve, then again I don't mess with Detriot or Volvo products.
I haven't worked on any of the D16s. But the D12D's I have and I can say this from experience. Run away, run far, run fast. The EGR valves are $1700 each and there are 2 of them.
Many of the parts are 15~40% higher priced and because you bought a totally proprietary system the parts only come from the dealer for the most part.
I have heard that the 16 was hard on fuel but would pull good. I know they are #### heavy
