I understand & agree that honesty is the best policy.... within reason. You have to weight the options sometimes.
Here is the problem I have with this situation. Look, with the company I work for, if something like that happened with me, they understand things happen. Nobody is perfect. This is life. Accidents & mistakes happen with me just like they do with safety guys, maintenance & the owner. Can you tell me that if the owner made a $100,000 mistake that he would resign his company & look for another job with out question & bar any excuses? Of course not. But a driver makes a $200 mistake & he gets fired because .... they have a no accident/mistake policy.
If I have a minor incident which is very rare, I report it & the situation gets addressed & our equipment doesn't look like they bought it from a scrap yard.
However, if I know I am gonna get fired over it, I'm keeping my mouth shut until caught. I mean if I tell, I KNOW that I am fired. If I keep my mouth shut, I may still have a job for a few years. I know that I have nothing... absolutely nothing.... to loose by keeping my mouth shut. I mean, the consequences is being fired... no questions asked nor any excuses excepted.
With a company like I work for, they understand things happen.... its life... its business. Get over it & move on.
Now if I am having frequent accidents & mistakes, a verbal reprimand, written reprimand, suspension, then firing is the normal process. If that's the case, I am more likely to co-operate, own up to it & take my punishment. However, in the case of this driver, if being fired is the only outcome... I'm keeping my mouth shut, they can try & prove how it happened & by whom, & their equipment can look like it come from the junk yard.
As far as I am concerned, their policy dictates their business model & what their equipment looks like.

This one time I backed off a busy street to a dock and ripped the mud flap off the tractor when I jumped the curb, Crete dinged me with an incident or something.
I’d of been better off throwing both mudflaps in a dumpster and telling them someone must have stolen them.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Or, you could just tell them someone stole that ONE mudflap...

This is why this industry is ####ed. #### happens and when you terrify every driver with the threat of marking up their record for #### that happens in the course of regular business, what do you expect? Torn mudflaps and #### like that should be considered the cost of doing business. Hell you jump out into the oil patch or the bush and stuff like bent steps, torn mudflaps etc are just #### that happens.

To cover up the incident and lie about it shows me the driver is dishonest. This goes for anybody who condones this kind of action. Covering up the damage shifts the blame to the next driver who gets the damaged unit.
If one of our drivers dings something and he tells us about it he'll probably get grumbled at a little but he won't get fired. But if he hides what he did or if he lies about it or tries to put the blame on somebody else when it was clearly his fault he'll be gone quick.
I figure, if he'll lie about little things, he'll lie about anything.
