IMO a nation is more than the legal and judicial boundaries it sets.
It WAS, and I believe still should be, a CIVILIZATION. i.e. social boundaries. and we are always redefining the boundaries of social behavior. more now than in the recent past. I think that's part of what is exacerbating the mask issue. there will always be a continuum of 'if it aint broke don't fix it' (traditionalist or conservative in the traditional non-political sense) thru 'we ought to be able to do better than this' (progressive)
unfortunately the traditionalist sense that we can live as we have is not supported by science. resorting to ignoring science is a terrible reflection on both our religious fundamentalists and our pathetic public education. BUT- it still doesn't change the science reality. Which is changing. AS IT SHOULD, we are barely beginning our understanding of this virus. No prior pandemic occurred with the high speed travel and population size and density we have now.
The more obstinate both 'sides' get the longer it's going to take to get workable solutions. If we can't get there perhaps we don't have enough Civilized motivation left to deserve to remain a country...
