I have a Cat SDP engine that is using oil. I would like opinions on whether it is worth repairing this engine or buying another Cat that is not an SDP and repairing it.

Pretty sure the block is the same from mbn on up, it’s the emissions garbage that ruined the SDP

If it consumes alot of oil. It probably has alot of blowby.
I once drove a 99 cat motor that started consuming at 175k. Cat is famous for undersized pistons. The top compression ring on all 6 pistons was broke.
That particular motor had the blowby vent on the side of the motor where oil was dripping out. Cats solution was to remove the hose and block it off with an oil fill cap. Swap the middle valve cover for a vented valve cover and hook the hose on to that. It fixed the oil loss problem. But still consumed oil.
Excessive blowby also dilutes the oil to the point you lose oil pressure.Yord and broke down plumber Thank this. -
I would rebuild it and make it not an SDP.
