Padded ones are good 1 1/2 to 3 inches thick , mines cloth covered , cost about 13 bucks but definitely worth it.
Had a beaded one for about four years , not great for cushioning , but for keeping off a leather seat during cold weather or hot weather it did the job -
I removed the seats. My abs and core are insane now.

If the seat is properly designed and fitted to the driver a cushion should be unnecessary. But in slip seating operations it might be useful. But just like seat selection itself, it is a very personal subjective choice. Trial and error would be the only way to find what works.

I am driving a new Volvo and this seat is the most uncomfortable seat I have ever used. It can adjust in many ways except "comfortable"

If you want a comfortable seat, invest in one. You may need to plop down a grand or more, but it's worth it not to experience all that pain.

I sit on a board full of rusty nails. I am sensitive about my manhood, thats why. Also, I am not the brightest egg in the basket.
