What is the best way to secure a 47000lb tracked excavator to a stepdeck? I have 3/8 chains and pop out chain tie down points good for 6600 lbs and the stake pockets good for 5400wll. I have never hauled one before so I figured I'D ask.

Ok, first rule is that because the machine weighs more than 10k you need 4 points of securement minimum, one on each corner. Then you need one on the boom. That is 5 so far. But remember if you hook from the track to the other side of the trailer that you only get 1/2 of the WLL for that chain. Unless you do something like I did with this excavator where the chain goes through the tracks and both ends of the chain are hooked to the trailer.

As for the rest, the standard rules apply. As you can see, the first chain is 1/2" and it only goes over one corner of the track and there is one on each corner giving me the 4 corner securement. I can tell you that doing it this way, nothing moves any direction. And I do not trust the tracks to hold the machine to. I can see them bending as I am tightening the chains. I know that people do it all the time but that is not me.

Pretty obvious what the issue is here, the pole is leaning too far into the road.:D

That machine looks a little big for that trailer. I've seen drivers that hit stuff with the boom too. ( maybe that's why they call it a "boom", because that's the noise it makes when you hit something.) Can never have too many chains holding those down. Years ago machines didn't have chain loops, and I would cross chain the tracks, and a couple through the tracks, like cnsper shows.

Thanks! Almost exactly what I was figuring. It is a lot cheaper to ask beforehand than break something or worse.

Is putting a 47000lb excavator on a step deck a good idea in the first place? That's a good size machine and maybe over width too putting all the weight on the outside of the trailer.

    ???

Yeah, it's a good way to warp a trailer. And be sure to measure your height.

CAT 320(ish), Kobelco/Deere 200(ish)- I'm guessing around 10'6"+/- wide makes it even tougher to secure on a step & 11'+/- tall. Not that I haven't seen it done.....
How many 3/8" chains with the WLL anchor points available? All of them.
