I believe if you are using one cable it's 1/2", two cables it can be 3/8. Personally, I'd use two 1/2".

Fiber core. Just remember that your aggregate working load limit on all of your securement needs to be more than half the weight of your load. That's why I would use dual 1/2" instead of 3/8". It's still easily manageable to flip 1/2" over a taller load when you get used to it.
