I know this thread started because of concern about parking in seedy neighborhoods in DG store parking lots, and I am a fan of said guns as earlier stated, but I also have to ask: Wouldn't a half ounce of prevention be worth all the cure in the world?

I guess what I'm really asking here is if you know for a fact you're in a rotten area with a high probability of having a problem, why park there. In most cases, 30 minutes will likely put you in a total different atmosphere in terms of safety and it's still close enough to deliver on time.

    Yep...most of the time.

And sometimes you may not know you're in the wrong place at the wrong time. I had a minor issue in Dalton, GA one time...not really known as a bad neighborhood. A 45 in his face made him decide he had gotten in the wrong truck...and he quickly said so.

I replied "You're dam right you did."

I'm surprised this reply took this long to be brought up. Honestly I take the chance for job security and money... pure and simple. When I park at the store I know for a fact I will be counted on time (2 late in 1 year = off the account) thus job security and it also allows me more time (HOS) to get back to my DC (on delivery day) and get a longer run the next day thus more money.

You are right that in a half hour, safer parking can be had in most areas but downtown Chicago is not one of them most times for me. Most of my Chicago deliveries involve 290 or 90/94 and they are absolutely blown up at 6am. I will loose much more than a half hour if I park some where "safe" like an Oasis. Admittedly it's a foolish risk I take at the stores in the name of $$$.

Make no mistake... if they do get IN the truck it will likely be the last time they ever do it. I am as prepared as can be for that.:biggrin_25525:

I would just like to here some ideas on how to make it HARDER for them to get in.

I always thought this too until one night my best friend and I were leaving the bar and an enemy from his past snuck up behind us and cracked him on the head with one. He went down but got right back up and chased the guy down only to beat him to a pulp with his bare hands :biggrin_2555:. After scurrying away i took him to the hospital to to get the 9 inch laceration in the back of his skull stitched and stapled up. It was at that point that I decided i was glad he was my best friend. :yes2557:

I understand the job security part, and there was a time even the money too. Now, some things are just more important to me than money. You're absolutely right about The Windy, there isn't much for parking other than the Oasis'. I roll there every week, but usually it's more in the 'burbs than Chicago proper for me.

The nail pulling tool is a good option. Also I use a 32oz ball peen tire thumper.

A friend of mine delivers meat to the Chicago area 3 times a week. He has several tricks one of which is tieing a small rope to the air horn that reaches the bunk. One time in Chicago someone was up on the running boards, he had the curtain closed, pulled on the horn jumped up to see the guy sprinting down the street. He had his tire thumper in hand just in case.:biggrin_2554:

I've done Dollar Store before, and I can definitely see his point on that one.

I won't mention what company, think blue, lol, but there were very picky about the Dollar Store accounts.

We've all done the same thing, haul butt and get there so you know your not gonna be late.

I never understood the dawdlers who would goof off and then have to haul ### just to get there on time.

This thread made me think of something else to. The first year I drove my parents went to Bass Pro and bought the biggest mag lite known to man for me.

I'm not kidding this flashlight takes about 12 D batteries and weighs about a ton. I'm sure if you could swing it it would do some major damage and its legal to carry in your truck.

Ok look! I'm not a trucker yet but I do know of a family friend murdered out of state by some people. He was at a gas station and was attacked. The person sometimes carried but didn't always. He was shot by another person. 10 people involved big deal him and his friends were attacked. This was in AZ the man was from IL... If your going to have anything to protect your self carry your #### gun because the day you don't have it or frankly don't carry at all is the day your going to need one.

When I start driving I'll have the following in my truck:

Glock23 with Big dot and 6 loaded mags, AK74 and 500 rounds of ammo. I will also have a full medical kit and flash lights ect.

You can't be too perpaired for anything.

Google "GetofftheX" it's a forum and has the links to a good training site in TN

Is it legal to carry a big cannister of bear spray in the USA. My son got into a brawl in Vancouver BC and he put 10 guys flat on their backs with bear spray. It's strong enough to drive an angry grizzley away. I can just imagine what facefull out of a truck window at pointblank range would do.
