Hey folks, so I had an interview with a smaller company that's regional and everything seemed to be kosher, I was offered the job and asked if I can start Monday, one day of orientation, and then I'll be assigned a trainer. Only dilemma is; I've been trying to get into a local company that's regional and I have two family relatives that work for the company, and I also had a cousin that worked for them too.
Shortly after I got my cdl I was told by the company that I needed to re submit and application because I was told from one of my family members that I needed to provide 10 years of work history, I didn't hear that from the woman I was talking with, so I took what he told me and sent a mig shift resume to HR; she called me back a day or two later only to tell me that I seemed to be unorganized and needed to re submit an application, so that's when I took off for one of the larger trucking companies. Remind you that I had turned in an application through my school, and it took her 12 weeks to tell me that I had to resubmit an application and that it was going to take a while to start the process all over, as a fresh graduate all I wanted to do was start making money and driving, unfortunately not even 3 weeks later I parted ways with the large trucking company.
I got home last saturday and filled out my application on sunday night, waited until wednesday to hear back from them before I called, I heard nothing from my family, or her, so I called on tuesday, and wednesday only to get no answer, so I left a voice message, I had an interview on friday morning which went well and wants me to start monday, so this time I blocked my phone number and called again, this time I was successful, she answered the phone and when she heard it was me she told me that she hasn't had a chance to review my application, and asked me if I was the one from Western Express?? If she hadn't reviewed my application then how did she know I was from western? She told me that she's been very busy, which she probably has been, but I too have been in management and know that days are worse than others, she proceeded to ask me about what happened with Western?? I told her everything, and she told me that maybe she will get to my application next week. And that was that.
My family swears by this company and feels that it's the best place for me and feels that I should not go to orientation on Monday. I can't bare the fact of not working and the longer I sit the longer my debt is not paid off, and if I don't show on monday I will not have a job, and not to mention that the other job may not even hire me, putting me back at square one, and I don't want just a "JOB" I want to start my career.
I am lost and not sure what to do, what do you all suggest?

Like you said. And that was that. A rough start is usually a sign.

I would go where they actually want you. You wouldn't believe how many recruiters I've talked to that say they're sending me info and applications, then it never shows up. I can read blank letters really well.
Poacher and Michael91184 Thank this. -

Take the job for now....you can change later if the preferred company makes the offer. Don't leave any job "on the if come".....ever hear the saying "the checks in the mail"(?), or, " a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"(?).....
That check may be in the mail but not in your mail box and that bird in hand will look really good baking in the oven! Take the job!d o g and Michael91184 Thank this. -
It sounds like the company of choice does not feel the same as your family. It may be a best fit for you, but not for the company.
I would take the job that is offered, not wait for the "I'll get back to you".
Good luck.d o g and Michael91184 Thank this. -
Orientation Monday...why wouldn't you?

Sometimes a recommendation can work against you depending on the reputation of who's doing the recommending. Do all your relatives have squeaky clean driving records and are loved by one and all inside the company?
Mudguppy Thanks this. -
She doesn't sound like she wants to hire you and is perhaps too unprofessional or mindful of the feelings of the family members that work there to just tell you outright...which when you think about it is unprofessional also.
Poacher and Michael91184 Thank this.
