I'm going to be really transparent here, I got my class A in 2023 November. Since then I've been working with my brother doing tank repairs on superyachts. It makes the resume look pretty but it's not class A trucking. Occasionally I do drive class B setups with a 2500 ram extended flatbed + hauling a trailer. The pay is also pretty underwhelming at $18 an hour after being there for over a year. My boss said he's give me a raise back a few months back when I started sandblasting, I sandblasted and the raise never came.
The other day I was fed up and called out the rest of the week to focus on applying to trucking jobs, and told the boss exactly what I was doing. I asked if I had any sick days and he hit me with the ol' "No you don't get any sick days or vacation time, if you get your hazmat and tanker you can drive the trucks (class B pump trucks), and i'd bump your pay."
My brothers been driving their pump trucks for 8 years - he's only at $26 an hour. Mind you, Pepsi starts drivers in our area at $29.50 an hour with full benefits. You can't really live in South Florida getting paid much less than that unless you get roommates. A decent 1 bedroom here starts at $1600 a month. So i'm not interested in working for this place anymore knowing I can use my class A to get paid more pretty much anywhere else (my normal checks are $500-$700 a week depending on OT).
I've applied to loads of places, and i'm getting slammed with the "We aren't taking drivers in your area" or I don't have the experience. My brother told me to hit up Chinatown. I understand that South Florida isn't the best for trucking, there's a lot more opportunities in northern / central Florida but i'm still with my parents so I have to make due with my situation.
I'm 25, have my class A and no accidents in at least 6 years, can pass any drug test, can drive manual, clean record with no felonies or misdemeanors. My only request is that if it's OTR I have to be able to take my dog with me. If anyone is interested in helping me out let me know!
