seems petty but, how did you pick your truck number?

I guess I didn't get creative enough. I started with #1 and got to #6, still have #4. My trailers weren't very creative either, F4802-3, R5302-3 and 4801 and 5301. I guess if I went back on my own, I'd have SD4804. LOL.

Not that I've ever chose any fleet numbers, but I did see some trucks awhile back lettered up with "Profit Taker #33" or whatever number it was - thought that was sorta funny.

Why do you need a number if you are not attached to a fleet of some sort.

KY requires a number for your weight distance permit.

IRP is subdivided by "fleets." Each fleet has it's apportioned states and weights. Within each fleet, each truck gets a carrier assigned number. A one truck operation is a fleet of one.

Some shippers will ask for the truck/trailer number as an added measure to prevent a situation where two brokers sell the same load (BTDT, at a shipper that did not have equipment numbers in advance). Or freight hijacking.

Everyone asks me what year it is, and since it isn't a petercar, I couldn't put a "class of '79" sticker on the side in good conscience, so I just picked 1979 as the truck number. Half of the people I come across connect the dots before they ask me, but some who don't still appreciate the idea later on.

Essentially, I picked it as a conversational piece. Works well since my trailer number happened to be 4 digits as well, and they're both easy to remember.
