Why must front axle tires be 4/32"+ tread depth? Couldnt they be 1/8"+ ?
    And rears 1/16"+ ?
We all know a blow-out on fronts is more dangerous than on drives. But is
the cost differance between recaps and new tires on your drives cheaper than the cost of just 1 blowout, considering fixing the tire, faulty equipment ticket, DAC, late load, etc.? I understand flats are going to happen, but are retreads so much worse than a non-retread that they are not allowed on fronts?
Im a newb to trucking so go easy.:dontknow:

Recap/ regroove on the steers are simply not allowed because when the cap separates, it leaves you with an inability to steer an 80,000 lb. vehicle. When a drive or trailer tire fails, there is another one right next to it that will (hopefully) take up the slack until you get the rig stopped safely. Steer tires are loners, so no backup is available....for the most vital part...steering.

Measuring tread depth in 1/32" increments provides for a standard that requires only the most basic math ability. If you tell a driver that the tread depth is 8/32", they know there are 4/32" left until tire shopping time...If you tell a driver that there is 1/4" of tread depth, they must do the math to find out that they are safe...versus knowing that 8/32" is good right off the bat.

Can you be ticketed or fined for being on a shoulder with a flat tire?

Depends on where you are and where the smokeys are...lol. The worst part is that you would have a major safety violation that would surely cost you your CDL and some hefty cash if you caused an incident because of it.....let alone the worst case, where you aren't the only one involved in the incident...then things can get way worse.

It's really just a simple safety thing that is simple enough to comply with. Blowouts and flats will happen, as I have been told numerous times, but you don't want to get caught with an improper tire because that will definitely get you put OOS.

Sooooooooo.....Student, What would you do if you blew a tire and had to stop?

I've never seen or heard of anyone losing their license because of a blown tire, Even if when it blew they bumped into something before they got stopped!

Just before the tire blew out...It wasn't an "improper tire" so how is that your problem?

    Just askin'.

Just relaying the info that I have been told by many folks who have been at it a while. The reason for suggesting the consequences is purely based on the initial discussion of recap/retread use on a steer tire...thus being improper. You know a lot more than I do about this, but I do know that when there is an incident and you contributed to the incident, you are usually "rewarded" for your contribution. If it was not an improper fitment, then that should be chalked up in the "stuff happens" category...I agree. I was just addressing the use of a wrong type of tire, not so much the standard flat/blowout situation.

BTW, I have read several of your posts and have learned a lot from them, so thanks for the good info.
I am a student to driving a truck, but I have been experienced with heavy equipment for quite some time...just new behind the wheel.
