We have an 09 Pete in the fleet with an ISX motor. Been on the road less than a month, 6 weeks. Just went to the shop for a leaking EGR cooler. $6000 repair bill I was told. Was burning a gallon of coolant per day.

10/4 Rollin coal and gokiddogo, I'm even looking into freightliners, I'm just trying get the best value for my dollar. I was leasing at prime inc for a while paying $1100 a week just on truck notes and BT insurance and it finally clicked in my mind that I could be doing way better on my own, and maybe pay $1200 or so a month I just got the contract with landstar , I'm not really financially ready but lol, I got enough for a strong down payment that a leave me a few grand for the first few weeks. I save my money real well and know if I can just a solid month in I'll have enough to cover any mess up's and so forth. I just know my knowledge is right and that I can dispatch myself way better than any so-called dispatcher that never had my interst in mind to begin with. I just need to make a good decision on my first truck then I can expand from there. So, I'm even considering a schinder truck, one from Atlanta, cause I know I could pay one of fast, then if anything were to go wrong at least I own the truck. But then I probably couldn't get warranty on it lol

I have learned a lot on this truck. Can't say I can justify getting rid of it in the next 5 years.
Discussion is to plan for replacement with either a 386 (not strong there) or a T660 or 680.
Finance guy I work with likes to see first trucks at $1500 or less a month for payments. Even for guys with experience, they don't like to go over $2200 per month.
www.sentry.com is a lead for you on insurance. -
Before you get chewed up by someone I thought I would tell you its Cummins not ings.
As for the rest , I have nothing more to add that don't be only focused on the engine the rest also counts. -
They all will break. Closing in on 800k you might get lucky and the previous owner already tackled the hard stuff, or not and it's right around the corner for you. Ask for service records. I've got a '04 Century and an '07 T-600. They both had some restoration/breakdown stuff done early, just for different things. FWIW the Freightliners were better to limp in versus a tow due to the nature of their issues.
Without going into lurid detail, the KW is a quieter ride and a slightly better spec for my operation, making it a half notch better to be in all day. The Freightliner will probably be the more economical choice in the long run.
PS: Cummins has no "G" in it. The word you used is either a city in Georgia just north of Atlanta with no "s" at the end, or something that would close this thread and get you banned real quick LOLLast edited: May 6, 2013
jcross Thanks this. -
LOL, you right Redforeman, my bad, I don't know what I was paying rent on. I thought it was a Cummings. No g, now I know . Lol . And MN driver I'm going to have to check out your link. I just got a call back from the MHC kenworth people and they said I wasn't apporved form a 39k loan but I was putting 7k down payment.. Now I'm on plan B, but I don't know what it is just yet. Maybe I'm not just ready yet, but I know I am. I would sure hat to RE-NIG on landstar because I honestly feel like they would be the best interest for my business... I would hate o get a schinder truck, but so far the first bank I went to doesn't want to finance a "first time commercial buyer" ...even though I've put well over 30k into Prime inc's lease program..

How long before your Prime truck is paid for?
-
Oh I turned the prime truck back in. It kind of was a bad deal, you don't get to keep the first lease, then on the second one you have to put up $13k for down payment then do another 3 year lease @900 dollars+ a week for rent payments a lone. They don't pay tolls, reefer fuel, and don't even pay for empty mi
