I got my CDL back in 2007, and have not used it since I quit CRST at the end of that year. Today I got a letter from Michigan SOS that said that because of a new law, I have to self certify, and it gives you 4 options. It says if your not sure which one to check, to ask your employer, but since I dont have a employer and I just want to hold on to my license so I dont have to get it again if I ever want it, what do I need to do? Do I need to pay for a Medical Exam even though I am not driving?
I dont have the paper in front of me, but I assume this is something people here are familiar with, but if you need more info please let me know.

Just certify as an intrastate driver if you're not operating a CMV and just want to hold on to the CDL.

What are they talking about? I haven't heard of this. Is it the medical certification, or something else?
If it is the medical certification, just get your yearly checkup at your own doctor and have him do the med-cert along with it. -

From my state:
"Beginning January 30, 2012, all CDL holders will be required to self certify the type of commerce they currently or intend to engage in as a commercial driver. This process, which requires the submission of a CDL Self Certification form to us at the DOL, must be completed by January 30, 2014. The purpose of the form is to determine if you are required to keep a current medical examiner's certificate on file with this department."heyns57, Sparky1982 and Big Don Thank this. -
I've called the states where their web site does not address the medical card issue with your CDL many times and they keep telling me if you're driving a CMV you must have your medical card. If you are not your license just reverts back to a class D. Same thing with the .04 and .08. You must be in a CMV unless it states otherwise. I'm sure there's some workings that are going to require everyone that holds a CDL to have a current med card. So all of us that have retired and do not want to give up the CDL either must do so or get medically certified.
Sparky1982, Big Don and Wargames Thank this. -

You have to provide the state with a medical card to get or renew a CDL after this coming Monday. You also have to state what type of driving you intend to do. Current holders have until 2014. Above link is for new holders but explains the categories of this self-certify bunk.Big Don Thanks this.
