Whatever you go with, the most important things are to have the appropriate level of situational awareness. I don't care if you're lugging an M60 around - the guy who sneaks up on you with a little .25 pistol at the ready has gotten the better of you, plain and simple. Another thing is both the know-how and resolve to use it. I saw a guy bragging about his Desert Eagle that he carried with him... yeah, it looks intimidating, and that alone could deter a lot of would-be attackers, but what about the ones it doesn't? We're talking about an extremely heavy and cumbersome pistol, with a 10" barrel... you're telling me the guy's going to have adequate response time with that thing? Then the guy who tells me he carries his Beretta "Israeli style" - he can't reach the trigger efficiently while the trigger's in the forward position, so his idea is that he'll rack the slide as he's drawing. Yeah, buddy... let me know how that works out for you in a situation of duress. And let me know what Israeli is ####### stupid enough to adopt that style, while you're at it.
While I'm all for self defense, 2A rights, and concealed carry, I am a bit disconcerted about the number of mall ninjas I see packing, and how obvious it is they wouldn't stand a chance against someone who actually does know what they're doing, as if claiming to have been Navy SEALs and experts on all things fighting and weapons related actually makes it true. Go at it like an idiot, and you're going to find yourself on the losing end.
The third... you have to know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em. If someone's got the drop on you, you've already lost. Better to give up your keys than to get your ### handed to you, believing your own ######## tales about being Rambo incarnate.

You will never catch a Navy SEAL showing up with only one weapon unless that is the only one he has left.... LOL

Each and every scenario is different. I had someone one time grab me from behind (long before trucking) and threaten me. I just looked over my shoulder and said "If you think you are big enough, go for it" and he was but he also backed off. Bullies and thugs do not like pain inflicted on them.

Ever wonder why someone that is afraid of a dog get bitten while someone next to them does not? Once someone senses fear then that just fuels them. I know my surroundings, I check my mirrors on both sides before getting out, I pay attention to people walking across the lot. Being aware is the key to it all. You can not defend against something that you do not see. If you are aware you can avoid confrontation.

Good post Witching. I've had two buddies that were special forces. You would never catch either one of them talking tough. They had already proven all they needed to prove in actual combat.

My one buddy and I would frequent a cowboy bar that was pretty rough. I saw him walk away from countless fights, and not one of those people he walked away from knew how lucky they were. This guy was a trained killer and tough as nails, but he never let on to anybody.

The first guys to talk tough are the first ones to turn tail.

A number of years back, TWO Denver, Colorado cops, armed to the teeth with Glocks, Tasers, nightsticks, etc. walked around a corner and ran into a 14-year-old armed with a pen knife. That kid stabbed and disabled both of them in 20 seconds.

It's about situational awareness, not putting yourself into a corner, and walking like you have a pair.

The DOT isn't concerned with caliber, just don't have an assault pistol, make sure it doesn't have a barrel shroud(the shoulder thing that goes up), an assault sling, or any kind of long stabby instrument on the end of the barrel.
