Wonder how all of the computers and sensors will fare dealing with road salt... as another said, there's no shock resistant material that is perpetually resistant to shock... no waterproofing that is always waterproof... it's about maintenance...

And with the way big fleets maintain their equipment now... it'll be a fun time in court when the big fleet is paying out on a lawsuit because of a corroded sensor...

O ye of little faith. There will be no errors. If a sensor goes out, the truck will automatically put it's hazards on, park on the nearest shoulder, and even do something that most drivers seem unable to do...put the triangles out. Drivers beware! It's curtains for you! Curtains, I say!

The things you have listed are EXACTLY why we won't see these things replacing us within OUR careers. Reading that article shows how LITTLE it can actually do. This is the industry that doesn't want to use automatic transmissions, let alone self driving. As another person stated, who's gonna load/unload them? How will tankers fill places? Tentacle like hoses gonna fly out from them? Planes have had auto pilot forever, they still have pilots in them, our careers are safe for a long time to come. It WILL happen one day, but no time soon.

If the radar sensors on it are like the meritor-wabco radar in this Cascadia I am driving, it won't even sense the pregnancy lady, her stroller with the twins, or the school kids. Mine only beeps at metallic objects. Doesn't "see" deer either.

Didn't one of those Russian Progress unmanned automated space ferries just crash and burn last week? You know, the ones that have been operating flawlessly for decades? With all the tech and redundancy that goes into a space craft, that would be one of the last things I'd expect to see from one of them. And here we are wanting to do this with terrestrial vehicles that have the capability to do nasty things to unsuspecting people.

Wait until your beloved automatic transmission fails to work properly. Drivin them and refuse to drive another. Its been said they will hold a gear coming off a mountain. Trust electronics with your life I wont. My manual transmission is automatic, after in the same truck for awhile the shifts are second nature..

Here's another story line with video on the new Self Driving Truck. I think they are here to stay. First, technology will only improve, any system which enhances safety and can reduce driver fatigue/error is going to be seriously considered and utilized. This system has the ability to do that on long distance hauls.

I can see a cop or DOT try to pull this type of truck over.
DOT will scratch the heads , scrug their shoulders and call the company for help.
A few Cops will ask for back up and spike strips maybe even swat.

Should be fun to see it on the news.

    I'm not scared at all.

Even a Swift driver can handle Nevada. (Arizona? New Mexico?)

Wake me when these things are able to merge after the toll booth at the George Washington Bridge.
