Was hoping to get some insight if anyone had any regarding my question.
I canceled my car insurance because I was driving semi and hardly came home so I figured it would save me money.
I call my insurance agent see what my rate would be if I decided to get my car insured. I was told it could be higher because I wasn't driving and did not have my car insured. They did let the company's know I am a truck driver but dident seen to do too much.
So I'm a little confused as to why the rates would be higher and not lower considering I am a active truck driver.
You might figure it would be signifficantly lower with the miles I've drove safely.
I probably put more miles in this last year then all my years driving car combined.

Because your CDL is considered a separate license from your regular license. You car insurance looks at it differently that the truck insurance underwriters do.
Example: You can have your CDL suspended for 90 days yet you can still drive a non commercial vehicle as long as what your CDL was suspended for was one of the serious violations listed here. Regulations Section

any gaps in insurance coverage and your rates will go up. simple as that. insurance company do not give discounts just because your a truck driver. my personal vehicle insurance is on progressive because i was able to get pretty deep discounts on the snapshot program.

    Get a different agent?
They have things that fall into their computer program that none of us can control. I assume the truck you are driving is not insured in your name. As such you have not had insurance maintained in your name and they restart you as a new insure and the rate is higher. Consider maintaining minimum coverage in the future even if you are not driving the vehicle.
A good agent can give you the best advise for your area. JMHO Good Luck .

Basically it's like starting over, from the beginning. Anytime you cancel your insurance it's almost like you wipe four slate clean.

When I first started driving I did the same thing- cancelled my car insurance. But I sold the car too. When it came time to buy a car and insurance again, my insurance agent told me that since I didn't own a car, there was no gap in insurance so my insurance would be at normal rates.

That seems to depend on what state your in. My State Farm agent here in Mississippi told me the same thing you stated, but in Oklahoma State Farm would not honor that.

What kind of car and what coverage did you have when it was insured, was it full coverage or just liability, and what insurance company. Have some info that may help but dont want to post a long winded reply unless it is relevant.
