He kept saying he was going to prison and would then lose his family. Well at least he is alive for his family unlike the others families.

According to the Safer site they have 241 drivers and 66 HOS violations is 27%. Over two years that makes it 13.5% per year. Way too many violations for something so simple. With over 600 driver inspections, some people are getting the same violation multiple times.

I agree with you. And I'm not defending the driver in this case. Obviously there was very little defensive driving going on. If you can't get over, you gotta slow down. I've done both before. If you can't do either, for whatever reason, you've got problems. But stuff like this would happen a lot less if EVERYONE would slow down, pay attention at all times, and be polite to everyone else on the road all the time. Pipe dream I know.

I came on to that mess a half hour after it happened. 11 hours later I got past it.

I drive thru Tennessee every trip. Those cops are super pissed off and are going to be looking for drivers to take it out on.

I for one will be very careful around there in the near future

A flat tire. Why didn't they limp it up the road a bit?

Not excusing the Spirit driver, he's responsible for the tragedy. But why the hell can't people use their brains and not stop just after a corner/bend if it's at all possible?

In the 15 miles in the I-40 is in county, there are 3 exits. This was also a work truck that looks like it only had 1 tire. So he was to tear up the road (Hey, job security I guess) and the rim to drive an average of 5 miles when if people would just follow the law he was fine (and expected) to pull over the the emergency lane?

P.S. I'm getting the 15 miles and 3 exits from looking at google map, I could be slightly off.....

From the picture this was right at the end of a corner. On the outside. About the worst place to be stopped.

Maybe they didn't have a choice and couldn't limp it a half mile but I see way too many stopped on the shoulder with no consideration for being seen.

And that stretch of I-40 between Nashville and Knoxville is already patrolled frequently, especially when you go thru the Cumberland Mountain range and plateau. I can guarantee you TN Highway Patrol are probably gonna saturate that area with patrols now. And the sad part is the four wheelers are going a heck of a lot faster than the trucks are. The speed limit on most of it is 65-70 m.p.h.,while a truck is moving along at 65 the four wheelers are blowing past at around 80 m.p.h. or higher.

I went past it this morning, from the 155 to the 162 mile marker there were 6 state troopers working, 2 big trucks and a car pulled over and something else was getting pulled over.
With no traffic, I could of seen a vehicle on the shoulder for at least a half mile, probably more, but being passed by a convoy of trucks all morning, there is a lot of time I can't see anything ahead of me.
