Hello all,
I'm new to the trucking field. I want to run an owner-operator business but I have a dilemma:
With this box truck hype, the price for box trucks exceeds the price for semi, if we compare same years and make; On the other hand box trucks (under 26,000lbs) don't require CDL which for me translate into no bar to enter this industry, more owner-operators hauling = lower rates and every day more box trucks flooding the market. I could see on DAT SB fares are not even close to 60-70% of those for 53 trailers.
Option A: 55-60k for 2015 box truck: Freighliner m2 106, International 4300 , or Hino 268 - 26ft, lift gate; on 200-250k miles with 1300-1500/month down + 1300usd/month insurance + maintenance + other. Probably 5-7k/week potential revenue OTR, and 4-5k/week revenue local or regional.
Option B: CDL A, and deep down with semi. I could see a lot more loads for semi than box trucks (1340 vs 26). Purchase cost would be almost the same even cheaper than buying a box truck, insurance and maintenance probably a little bit higher. Dry van, PO, or Reefer?
What would you advise me?
