Dumb rookies
While driving along the back roads of a small town, two rookie truckers came to an overpass with a sign that read CLEARANCE 11'3".
They got out and measured their rig, which was 12'4" high...
"What do you think?" one asked the other.
The driver looked around carefully, then shifted into first. "Not a cop in sight. Let's take a chance!"trucker_101 and bbqhoncho Thank this. -

I would be there about once every couple months, and frequently would notice a truck pinned underneath the overpass.,I asked the dude loading me about this finally, and he told me there was a tow shop 1 block away who's main source of revenue was from this happening..I haven't been there in 3,4 years, but it is on the same street as where the great trucking company Palmentere Bros. is located..PS-The last remark was loaded with sarcasm.

In New York, generally, a bridge marked a foot lower than actual. There are some up on I-87 in Plattsburgh marked "ACTUAL CLEARANCE", and they're all 14' plus.

Guys, I drove in northeast, specifically new York city. From Brooklyn to Albany every night. I can tell you that I know of half a dozen of overpasses that mark 12' 6" and a 13'6" truck clears with room to spare. Those signs are not always accurate. Of course I wouldn't try to go under it if I didn't know already but I knew teamsters that used to. I remember feeling sorry for OTR drivers getting off I278 in Brooklyn because it said low clearance ahead, then they would be stuck in the middle of Brooklyn lost. I tried to tell them and even pass them to show them it's ok but they wouldn't follow. My point is that those clearance signs are very misleading and perhaps this driver knew that and decided to try. Not very smart, I used to park on the side of the road and wait for other truckers to clear overpasses like that then I tried.
