Freebird, I understand the political and social point you are trying to make, but numbers in english are the same in Spanish. And just because you don't speak English, does not mean that you are an idiot that can't assume that the numbers on the sign mean the clearance of the overpass, even if you can't understand the word clearance. As far as arabic numerals, the "western" numbers are widely used in Hindu-Arabic speaking countries and they are learned in grammar school. As a matter of fact, they invented the numbers themselves.
I ran into this scenario a few times. Not in NY but in other cities. If the bridge is marked 14' and under I actually stop the truck short of the bridge get out and look (GOAL). I would rather go under the bridge knowing I can clear it then not be sure and take a chance.
in the ny area there ARE bridges that have heights such as that posted, but you can go under it, you basically have to inch up to it and figure out for yourself if its low or not...11' 8" or not,you might fit.. in ny you have to measure it yourself to know the height. the most common ones say 12'6" or 12'8",and those almost always you can go under.. these trucking companies pay tax's etc,the bridges, especially the ones on truck routes should be properly maintained so that they are labeled and maintained at the correct height,or built higher..but of course not. i like that im paid 100$ extra to go into ny city or long island etc tho,so thats a plus.
