I was glad to read the driver accepted fault & plead guilty. Others would have tried to plea bargain had a trial & make everone relive that tragic day.
I've lost 2 brothers in car wrecks, my little bro was hit while stopped at a light. The cops estimated the other car was doing 40mph, it knocked him into the intersection, he was t boned. The driver admitted he was playing with his phone. He pled guilty & was sentenced to life. Even tho it didnt bring Benny back we felt some closure.
Then 6 yrs later a drunk t-boned my twin & his fiance just after they found out they were pregnant. That ####### had a trial & we had to relive that night the absolute worst time of our lives. He is also doing life with no chance of parole or probabtion.

The trees are not a factor. Period. You are placing an unreasonable expectation upon the bus driver... that of being a psychic. There are hundreds of thousands of intersections that do not have a clear and unimpeded view. That is why there is a stop sign. If the truck driver had done the bare minimum that his job required--stopping at the stop sign--sixteen people would not be dead.

IF there was a yield sign, IF it was an uncontrolled intersection, you could have an argument regarding the trees being a factor in the crash. Neither of those conditions exist. There were no conditions preventing the truck driver from seeing the sign. There were no conditions preventing the truck driver from stopping other than his negligence. There is no argument to say the bus driver bears any responsibility.
Your anti-cop bias is noted. If you think the RCMP are beholden by even the smallest measure to any level of government or any ministry illustrates your complete lack of knowledge of how policing is conducted and governed in Canada. Here's a teaser; all police in Canada are agents of the Crown, they are not subjugated by any government department. To suggest, without proof or cogent argument, that an accident investigator is going to fudge a report--particularly the report of one of the most-high-profile accidents in the country's history--to possibly protect a provincial ministry of transportation is well beyond absurd IMHO.

I understand your point, all drivers have to be situationally aware of their surroundings and drive defensively just in case.
Before the point of impact, the only possible glimpse the bus driver could have possibly had of the truck would have been about, hmm, half to 3/4 of a mile back. It wasn’t just trees blocking his view, it was an entire farm yard. That’s why the trees are there, wind break for the farm home and yard.
With 26 meters of skid marks, it means the bus driver was looking and paying attention. Or at least not distracted himself.
Would have, could have, should have. Yea, he could have. But most of us would have just had our vehicle set on cruise control and would have had the exact same result.

So you drive through there all the time, know it's dangerous, and yet you're still exceeding the speed limit by 20%?! o_O

    Sorry for your loss.

I’ll be honest (like always) I don’t think I would’ve plead guilty. I would’ve st least sought a plea rather than have the families go through a trial. In the end, the judge might go e him the same sentence the crown would’ve offered and the families are spared.

14 young people are dead. Countless lives have been forever altered by this tragic event. There are wounds that will never heal.
And you guys want to argue with each other, and berate each other and engage in foolish games of semantics?
    Shame on you.
