Semi-truck collides with tractor near Bellmont

Matthew Marriott of Bellmont was not injured Thursday evening when the tractor he was operating on Route 15 was struck on the left rear tire and wheel by a semi-truck tractor trailer that also sustained extensive damage to the right front fender and fuel tank.

Illinois State Police are continuing investigation today of the occurrence which witnesses said involved a semi from the Charles Carter Trucking company. The driver of the semi also was reportedly not injured in the collision.

The collision about 6:30 p.m. occurred on Route 15 between the two turn-offs to Bellmont as the tractor was reportedly traveling westbound. The tractor went into a field alongside the highway after being struck by the semi.

Bellmont firefighter Colby Rigg said about 150 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the punctured fuel tank on the semi, and firefighters from both the Bellmont Fire Department and the Mt. Carmel Fire Department used 40 bags of absorbent to clean up the spill.

Route 15 traffic was diverted onto old Route 15 through Bellmont while emergency personnel worked at the accident site.

A total of 22 firefighters were on scene as well as five fire trucks, including Mt. Carmel's HAZMAT unit.
