On a 2002 freightliner century 12.7 . What would have to be done to use a 1998 12.7 computer? Would it be plug and play and if so I'd it still work with an eld ?

No reason that I can see why it wouldn't. There both ddec4. Should be I think.

Look at the ecm on each, should say ddec4 right on it..

Or would it show 1998? If so could it qualify for eld exempt ?

It's best to buy the correct computer part for your engine. Sometimes they burn up, but replace them with the correct one. Don't try to use a older.

The 1998 engine would be a little different in some ways than a 2001 that we had. The details escape me at the moment. But spend a dollar and put on the correct new computer to your current engine. If it is a 2002 engine, put a new 2002 computer on it.

One thing is there is a reason pre-1999 is exempt and partly thinking the older computer before 1999 cannot or will not support ELD's

    It will support eld.

Any electronic engine will support eld.

It would not matter. That engine S/N stamped on the block. That is what would make it Exempt from ELD's. Not the ECM or anything else. Buddy of mine just swapped a 1999 6NZ for a 2002 engine. The Kid that owns the truck. Pulls a reefer, and changed out a 500,000 mile engine. Replaced it with a Reman 6NZ from Cat. And it came with the Electronics also.
Same shop will be replacing a 2008 engine with a 6NZ 1998 model Reman next week. And one truck was in there last week. His is a 2000 model truck, has a 2000 model engine. And he was checked into swapping out the engine also. For a 12.7.

It will work but, you need to check hp setting to make sure your engine internals can handle it.

You will have to set injector trim, speedometer, radiator fan turn on may need to be changed and there are other parameters that may need changing.
