Ok guys I don't have much experience with freightliner to know as much about them as I do with peterbilt or w900's but I'm on the local fire dept and since I do know trucks I got nominated for this project. We got a m916a3 to convert to a tanker and wanting a herd bumper on it but I need to find out for sure if this is a setback front axle on a fl120 cab like I think it is.![]()

Set back axle gives you a tighter turning radius and a shorter wheel base. Means it has a shorter hood and the steer axle is set back closer to the cab

Axle placement. A set foreword axle would be about a foot toward the bumper.

You can also tell if you use a curse meter in the cab when the driver is backing into tight spaces w/o much room out in front or to the sides. More cursing means longer hood and wheel base, and therefore not a set back.

I know some of my posts seem half-baked, but I know what I want to say, just have a hard time expressing it. Also, a set-back axle allows you to get more weight on the steer axle, which in the case of my Pete (below) and other long wheelbase trucks, I've heard, I actually took weight OFF the steers when I had 34K on the drives. Set-back axles do seem to ride a little rougher, as I drove a Freightliner set-back axle cab-over( awful truck) that rode like crap, despite the air ride cab and suspension.
