Howdy everyone. I'll be back in a transfer dump truck soon and I'll be installing my setup on the new truck. All of our drivers that spend most of the time off road and on goat paths angle the antenna down towards the front of the rig. Will this effect the SWR reading?
I was going to follow suit as well OR get a heavy duty spring for the Wilson 2000. Thoughts?

If it works for your other guys why not try it?
-
10-4. I'll try it first. Just wondering if anyone had any insights on setting the angle down.

I try to keep mine perfectly vertical.
On some trucks that isn't always possible.poppapump1332, Bout Z and Air Cooled Thank this. -
Ive run plenty of goat paths in east ky, wv, and western va, pullin a dump with a wilson 2k set vertical. The antenna can take a beating, you may have to straighten the whip from time to time, but the weak point is the mount and stud..dont skimp on those.
Ive seen alot of guys angle their antenna forward, but my thinkin is, if the antenna does get caught in trees, low bridge etc, with a forward angle, its going to pull the antenna harder, for a longer amount of time, until you clear the obsticle, so I dont recommend it. That said, I have angled them back, in extreme circumstances, but I didnt see a noticable difference in performance.
As for swr, its possible it can be affected..it may not be...it just depends. Mounting location, amount of angle, the truck itself..alot of variables affect antenna systems. Like rabbi said, you really just have to try and see. -
Angling antenna's is stupid imo unless you have no choice as when you transmit your power comes off your coil 360 degrees,so when your antenna is angled now its transmitting into the ground and up in the sky instead of straight out which will affect how far you can get out always best to keep it as vertical as possible.

It's all going to depend on the individual installation, but if it was me, I'd pick up a spare stinger and put a 45-degree bend to the rear in a few inches above where it comes out of the coil. As someone else said, a forward angle will likely increase you problems rather than solve them.

Great responses everyone. I'd rather keep it vertical if possible. Along with the antenna, I have heavy duty Wilson mount for the mirror. I was thinking about putting on a heavy duty spring. The big Barrel type spring would probably keep it from moving around while driving but probably won't offer the same give of a heavy duty spring with that length. It's only about 5 feet in length. Anyone run with a spring? I see quite a few dump trucks around here with them.

Had this one for decades

Does it flop around while driving or have performance issues when it moves?
