Ever heard of the old bait & switch routine??
Car dealers would use this ploy a lot.
They advertise one car and try to sell you another.
Well trucking company recruiters are using this tactic
now more than they ever have in history.
You see an ad for a driving job you might like.
So you call the recruiter and he/she says that particular
job is filled but they have a couple of others that might
interest you.
Usually those "other" jobs are bottom-of-the-barrell
positions that nobody else wants and come with a
high turnover.
Some outfits are so low that they will put you thru
their orientation program before telling you that the
job they originally offered is no longer available.
And since you probably quit your old job to go to
their orientation you're stuck with whatever they
give you.
Most recruiters think we're just a bunch of dumb
truck drivers and they can do whatever they want.
But some of these practices are illegal and you can
call them on it if you're smart.
If you go to an orientation get your promised job in
writing BEFORE you attend.
If they bait & switch you over the phone hang up
in their ear and move on.
Sooner or later they'll get the message.

The trucking company that promises you that dream job in writing doesn't exist, plain and simple;if you can find one like that please post it here. You may eventually get that plum job but have to earn it first. It's the old carrot on the stick routine,to keep your hope up till you realise you've been had.

It doesn't hafta be a dream job.
Just deliver what they promised without all the
bait n switch advertising.
I saw a job in my town on CareerBuilder.com that
I thought would be good for me.
It was posted online yesterday (Sunday).
I called the recruiter and he said the job was already
filled but he had this "other" job on the hook.
I was already familliar with this "other" job.
It's got a 900% turnover rate and nobody with any
sense will touch it with a ten foot pole around here.
I called him on his bluff and asked him how the posted
job could have been filled in 24 hours time.
Especially with all the hoops you hafta jump thru to
get hired in the truckin biz nowadays.
And on a Sunday no less.
He had no answer that made any sense.
Just the usuall double talk.
In short he was lying thru his teeth.
Granted, that's not unusuall for a recruiter.
But the bait n switch tactic is noteworthy
and drivers must be on the alert.Last edited: Jun 6, 2011
