When in orientation a couple months ago, there were several that had gone to orientation with another company and for various reasons did not continue on with them (including bad trainers) Be honest with any company you apply to and state you, on your own initiative, got further training and are now ready to drive. Shifting is a common problem and many have issues with it when starting orientation with their first company. The trainer was at fault here - never even giving you a chance - and the company was at fault not putting you through orientation.

Be honest about what happened and why you aren't there. You're new. You're not supposed to be Mr SuperTrucker. You made an honest mistake and did what you could to keep the truck under control. Any company would understand and bring you on with a trainer to make sure your skills are up to par. Good luck to you.

Your definitely letting them know your serious about trucking. Taking the extra 25 hrs of training on your on was a good move.

How steep and long was the downgrade?
(the steeper and longer it was, the stupider the trainer is)

I don't think I'd let any trainee drive down a downgrade you had to gear down on, until I had seen him drive OK for a few days, at least.

    3 hours?

The trainer was mostly upset because HE screwed up!

I hope you get some sort of documentation for the extra training you are paying for, that a company will accept.

I think I would have just started calling carriers, be honest 'I have a CDL and finished gearjammer school but I really need some time with a GOOD trainer'.

A quality trainer would have recognized your shortcomings and been there to assist you. This trainer doesn't qualify as "quality".

A trainer is more then someone to tell you "don't scrub gears" or "swing that corner wide". Unfortunately, good trainers (or even average ones who just make a better effort then others) are getting harder and harder to find.

    Good luck to you!

I was thinking the same thing. The "trainer" probably realized you were going to need time with him in the jump seat, wanted nothing to do with it, dumped you, and hoped for another "trainee" he can team with sooner. You were nothing but a second log book for that guy.

Don't call yourself disgracful or feel ashamed.Do you think you're the only one that's had a mishap, think again. It happens and you learn from it.Next time and you don't feel comfortable taking a certain road, tell your trainer.I doubt what happened will tarnish your chances with this next company.Cheer up,you'll do better next time.

So you had a minor problem. Realized what it was, got the extra training (on your own) to resolve the problem. Companies should love that kind of attitude and smarts. If they don't, they are not worth working for. As you have already been told, never lie. It will come back to kick ya in the backside.

That is disheartening and disgusts me to no end!!! There should be NO blemishes on your DAC bc you are JUST learning for #### sakes!!! If that happened the exact way you explained it,I'd be livid if I were you. Sounds like that carrier NEEDS to be evaluated.

You hang in there,bc you will be laughing at that shifting in no time at all.And as far as that trainer...pahleeeze,sounds like some cranky, better than thou zero. I've never had to deal with a trainer but if I did and they were like that,he'd find himself twisted up in the steering wheel head first,or left on the side of the road! No sense in that at all! I can't believe people are treated like that....ugh!
