Pardon my ignorance, but I was taught to drive by my dad who didn't Know or use proper driving lingo. So some of the terms I see on here don't click in my brain. My family has always been in construction. I've driven many standard transmissions coming up in my early years. Initially when I was a carpenter mostly step vans and small 5 speed dump truck. Then when he shifted more towards roofing we got into dump trucks with what I called 5 speeds with a high and a low range. Usually F600 or the equivalent in GMC, Dodge, or International and usually atleast 15 years old when he acquired them. I drove these vehicles from the shop to job sites and landfills for about 15 years.
Can you guys tell me if what I called a 5 speed with a high and low range is what truckers call a 10 speed? And would these old trucks have been what's called synchronized transmissions or not? These old trucks were mostly 60's and 70's models. I drove them in the early 80' to the late 90's.
When I took over the business in 2000, retired the old trucks and we started pulling dump trailers with 4wd pickups.
Is there much difference in shifting a big rig versus these old trucks?
Again, please pardon the ignorance.![]()

5 speeds with 2 speed axles were what you had i imagine. 5 speeds that are split, while 10 speeds are shifted through low range and them through high range, without a splt.
xlsdraw Thanks this. -
Yeah, you're refering to a 6 wheeler 6 yd dump, probably. A 5 speed with a 2 speed brownie. Brings back memories........

YIKES!!! That's one scary video! And the scariest part is the guy dresses just like my Dad!
I always wondered how people learned how to Juggle. Now I know. Way too much arm thru the steering wheel action going on for a newbie.

Yes shifting a 10 speed( or any other fully manual trans. 8,9,10,13,15,or 18 speed) is different than your old trucks. Big truck trannys are not synchronized. You need to double clutch to shift them. You can also float the gears and not clutch at all. This is something that takes time and practice to learn how to do.
With the 10 speeds in big trucks you shift 1 thru 5 in low range, flip the range selector to high and go back to 1st which is now 6th and shift up to 10th. Your just shifting 5 gears twice.
Their is another 10speed called the super 10. With this one you shift 1 thru 5 with a high and low for each gear. You actually split each gear. Your old trucks could be shifted the exact same way. The only differance is the super 10 is all in the trans. and your old trucks the spliting would happen in the rear end.
So in conclusion, its nothing like your old trucks. It takes a long time to learn how to properly shift a big truck. It takes most new bees months to realy become good at shifting. Some even longer. Some people never get it. Thats why some companies are going to automatics. This way the companies dont need to teach new bees how to shift.xlsdraw Thanks this.
