Do a search for the term "floating the gears". It's been discussed at length with detailed instructions, and no, it won't do any damage. I think the majority of experienced drivers do it.

Once I learned my truck and watched RPM's for a while I was able to start shifting without a clutch, and now all I do is listen to the engine and shift accordingly. Some drivers can pickup right away and some never master it. I wouldn't try it till I was in the truck for a while and if you happened to have to drive different trucks they are all a little different in the feeling of the gears, some shift hard, some are loose and will drop right in. Goodluck!!!!!
msfern29 Thanks this. -
Good for you on wanting to learn to shift without the clutch. If you want to learn try and keep the reeves down and and when you are ready to make a shift keep on the throtle and as you come of the throtle bring the ####er back one notch and then slowly bring the shifter into the next gear as you will feel it go in. once you practice this several times you will get it done pat and won't think twice using your clutch again only at the lights and stop sign.

If you are not grinding gears while clutching, you are halfway there. Just pay close attention to the "sweet spot", where engine speed meets gear speed and road speed. If you are in the same truck, in no time at all, you'll get it

Itll come to ya everyone had to learn some it was just natural after a while itll be second nature dont stress it youll be fine never force it you have to finess it

I tried double clutching right from the get go and could not get it right. I decided to try it without the clutch and now I have no problem floating at all.

When drivers came to me for a road test I wanted to see them shift four different ways. The first, which is asked the most, is to double clutch. If you do that well I want you to get in the highest gear as fast as possible without racing. IOW's you could use progressive shifting. Then there would be floating. The last is to see if you can skip gears on the downside.
I'm not a fan of people floating if they do not know how to do the others. I do it and it brings me to my last point. Shifting a truck is knowing what gear to be in at any given speed. If you're just starting out I suggest you learn how to double clutch and go from there. -
