It's actually hard on your engine. I have done it plenty of times, more than I should have. It allows you to hit the next gear faster. You either forget or just to lazy to flip the switch. The old mechanical motors, if you missed the next gear and was not fast enough on the fuel, the jake would choke your motor and it would stall.

Jakes are for slowing down on hills and such....no reason to be on when your shifting a truck. That is abuse..plain and simple.

I do it off road in the hills on occasion. Either jake it between shifts or pull up a hill in 1st gear..........

Only time I do it is when I forget to turn it off. [IMG]

I trained with the brake on and I couldnt tell...mainly ebcause I was double clutching. Same thing with when I got into myt ruck. After a while, I started floating gears and with the jake on...its a pain...really jerky. The thing kicks in as soon as you take yoru foot off the throttle, and it slows down which makes it a pain to shift. turn it off and you will shift much smoother.
Also...jakes dont help the fuel efficiency either.

Yea, I always say something. That sucks. Why would someone use a jake to slow down to go around the parking rows in a truck stop?

SOmetimes if you are starting on a steep hill it is the only way to get the next gear before you stop.
the automatic truck I'm driving at the moment will sometimes turn the jake on when it shifts even if you have the switch off.

I knew a guy once that said the sound of the jake brake made him feel more like a man. That idiot never turned his off. I guess he has self esteem issues.:biggrin_2559:
