Shifting with the jake and leaving your foot on the clutch are bad habits, i personally see no reason for either one.

Yeah I can't understand why you would have the jake on in that situation. Switch it off.

thanks for the input fellas, its just tough to properly upshift when climbing a hill with a heavy load, like i said shifting is not an issue on a hill, i just wind it up a few hundred more rpms and wait a little longer before i hit next gear, just that by the time i give it throttle the engine is being lugged due to having to wait in neutral while the rpms dropped enough to shift smoothly. shifting with the jake is a skill, and yea if you dont know what your doing i can see where problems can happen, but if you know what your doing, it can be a HUGE help.
i highly doubt there is a better alternative to shifting while climbing a hill than to properly use the jake, with a heavy load in a dump truck, all the good dump truck drivers seem to be quite familiar to upshifting with the jake on, so i plan on joining the pack. thansk - dan -

Drove a dump truck and currently drive my own otr truck. I've NEVER shifted with the jake. Especially uphill. Whats the point? Is it possible those guys are running 13-18 speeds and are using the jake when splitting gears? I know some guys who do that, don't recommend it, but if your good at it, won't hurt anything. However, if your driving a straight 7-10 speed, the jake WILL not help you shift up a hill. Just keep practicing shifting. You'll be running the hills like a pro. Keep in mind also, some trucks are spec'd out by accountants, not truck drivers. No matter how hard you try you might NEVER get it to not lug. It might be geared just a 10th or two too high and that's causing the lugging.

dan i am curious about what transmission this truck you are driving has in it. if its a six or seven speed, i can see where the jake could slow the engine faster in between the gears to help get the engine get to the right speed for the next gear. but as for 13 15 or 18 speeds i don't think there is enough gap in between the gear speeds for you to use the jake effectively to upshift. one thing you might try is double clutching.
