Today I arrived at my shipper appointment early; as usual, and was told to dock at door 24, open the doors, slide the tandems and stop about 5 feet short of the dock to have the trailer inspected. OK, fine, done. But wouldn't it be smarter to inspect the trailer first. Sorry, just a thought. Inspection passed just fine and was told to bump the dock; remove red air line, shut off the truck and give them the keys. WHAT ! It's 30 degrees and you want me to sit in my truck freezing to death while you take forever to load me. I don't think so. I politely told them that I would not comply with that due to the temperature. They said .... "company policy". I said: "no thank you, I'll see ya next time". The look on their face was priceless. It's their company .... their freight, so I didn't throw a fit. But until they respect the drivers they can haul it themselves as far as I'm concerned.

I delivered to a Sam's Club once and they asked for my keys. I have them up no problem, not only did I have a second set in my pocket, I could also pull the key from the ignition and the truck kept running. So they came out and told me to give them my keys. I told them I already did and showed them the ignition with no key in it. He just look puzzled and unloaded me anyway.

Some of these places are ridiculous. If I didn't have a bunk heater and it's 30 outside and idling is my only source of heat, yeah, I ain't turning my keys in. I don't blame you for what you did.

If enough drivers do that when it's extremely hot or cold then maybe they could loosen their policy a bit.

Did they load you? I don't usually go to big warehouses, but when I have they normally respect that when you tell them nicely. One time 5 or so yrs ago they gave a hard time, we came to a agreement of just dropping trailer completely and staying parked in front of my trailer.

Without shippers and receivers you wouldn't have a job, customer is always right ya know.Of course many of us may agree with you but you're not hurting anyone but yourself and the company or broker you're hauling for.In trucking money is always first. So what did you do with the freight?

That is a company driver mentality, your equipment comes first when you own it. Without it your out a job and shippers/receivers go on their merry way. When temps are in minus numbers you don't shut tractor down. That's a pointless breakdown waiting to happen. When you explain that politely most people respect it.

Just stop at a Catholic Church and go thru the lost and found and grab a key. Problem Solved.

Because they drink a lot, and they have to constantly kneel sit and stand, they lose stuff.

It is? I always thought safety was first, second is my comfort, and third is the money.

The OP left it on the dock, same place I would have left it.

How come they didn't let you disconnect from the trailer and pull forward a few feet to keep the truck running?

I said minus numbers. Minus 30 would be super cold. Don't get bent out of shape, we all make a living performing customer service as a o/o, so I agree customer is important. With that being said the customer is not always right. Especially when it comes to your equipment, majority of the time when it comes to your equipment the customer doesn't know anything, let alone know how to be right.
