Cool way to waste money and make yourself look like an asocial #######. Everybody in the real world hates this, and most states (if the police ever actually start doing their jobs again) will ticket you.

I think it's been illegal to modify exhaust components for a long time, but it was never enforced. Aftermarket motorcycle exhaust has "Off Road Use Only" plainly stamped in it for example.

UPS did just that on their Package Cars they run here a few years ago. Went from specing ISB to GM gas because it was cheaper to replace gas engine versus maintenance required on aftertreatment system.

Problem is, all this emissions BS most likely has a greater delaterious impact on the environment than if the same resources had been applied to strictly producing a more efficient engine.

When one deletes a 2016 pickup and instantly gets an additional 4 mpg, or 20% better fuel mileage, it causes a person to start thinking about the unintended consequences. Here are a few that come to mind:
    1. 20% more fossil fuels being burned in order to "promote" cleaner air
    2. 20% more trucks hauling fuel
    3. Natural resources spent to produce those additional trucks, including tires, batteries, etc. (More Fossil Fuels)
    4. The production of DEF and the resulting increase in the price of all urea related products (fertilizer)
    5. The natural resources (fossil fuels) required to produce the stupid plastic def containers
    6. The forest products required to produce the cardboard box that contains the plastic jugs
    7. The vast increase in landfill production required to dispose of the additional DEF containers
    8. The additional infrastructure required to produce, transport, and dispense DEF
    9. The nautural resources required for the production of DPF and SCR systems
    10. The additional staff, infrastructure, and taxes spent on enforecement of emission laws
Now, before the comments about me being a radical right-wing redneck come forth, let me say this:
I drove in Los Angeles in the 70s, and can vouch for the improvement in air quality (at least in appearance) between then and now, brought on by emission laws implemented then. Further, I don't believe there is nefarious intent in the creation of current emission standards. I just wish that possible unintended consequences are studied in far greater detail than they obviously have been in the past. But it should be clear by now that agenda-driven outcomes that choose to use only the science that supports the desired outcome will be the death of us all.

    Just my opinion.....

The greatest problem is the engine manufacturers will do the least possible to meet standards. You give them a goal and they push out crap at the last minute. They're in it to make money, not make good products. It's possible I'm sure, but they will drag their feet every step of the way.

The more improvements are made the easier it will be to build on top of previous tech. I always refer to how crap catalytic converters were to start and now modern cars are vastly superior. It's just a matter of time while the engine makers pull their heads out of their ###.
