From what I can figure I am limited to 14hrs a day. I can run over my 14 once in a week. 11hrs of driving in that 16.

I return to the same terminal at the end of my shift. I usually have a 5 day week with 60+hrs. Then a 34+ reset.

Any specific reason that is needed to go beyond the 14?

Short-haul exemption is a 150 mile radius setup for 'non-CDL' drivers.

As a trucker you have 14 hours and can, occasionally, run 2 hours over the 14 for 'conditions unforseen at the time of dispatch' like a massive traffic tie up from an accident, etc.

If it existed b/4 you left you can't use the extra 2 hours on duty...

    Whoaa...back-up the truck!

    1. Adverse Driving Conditions (395.1(b)) allows an additional 2 hours of driving (up to 13) but does not extend the 14 consecutive hours

    2. There is an exception to the 14 hour rule that applies to CDL drivers.
    395.1(o)
Property-carrying driver. A property-carrying driver is exempt from the requirements of § 395.3(a)(2) if:
    (1) The driver has returned to the driver's normal work reporting location and the carrier released the driver from duty at that location for the previous five duty tours the driver has worked;
    (2) The driver has returned to the normal work reporting location and the carrier releases the driver from duty within 16 hours after coming on duty following 10 consecutive hours off duty; and
    (3) The driver has not taken this exemption within the previous 6 consecutive days, except when the driver has begun a new 7- or 8-consecutive day period with the beginning of any off-duty period of 34 or more consecutive hours as allowed by § 395.3(c).

    3. The answer to Rug Trucker's original question is - No, no specific reason is required as long as you meet each of the qualifying requirements in 395.1(o)

You always need to note on your logs why you went over. A simple 'safe parking haven' suffix will suffice.

How about my boss scheduled too much ###### work to do in 14 hrs? :biggrin_2559: I can't park a gas tanker just anywhere.

    THBatMan8 Thanks this.

    That'll work. :biggrin_2559:

Making a notation covers your butt. Is shows your company and the potential DOT inspector you knew you were out of hours, and you knew when was the proper time to use the extension.

It sounds like you DO meet the requirements of 395.1(O), wherein you can have one 16 hour day each week.

You are still limited to your 11 hours of driving that day, but you can have a 16 hour window of duty instead of 14 in case you need it.

This has NOTHING to do with the Adverse Driving Conditions exemption of 395.1(b). (BatMan)

I never stated it did. :biggrin_25524:

The OP can't use this extension as a local driver (IIRC).
