There is NO shortage. If there was a shortage of drivers then the value of drivers (remuneration package) would increase like the price of any commodity does. What happens when there is a drought like this past summer>the value of hay, corn and bean skyrockets! Driver pay is stagnant!
Fleets suffer fron "driver churn" which is the constant moving of a certain percentage of drivers from job to job. Fleets need to have better hiring practices and not just hire to put "meat in the seat".djtrype, cowboy_tech, Working Class Patriot and 1 other person Thank this. -
if there were driving shortages like the govt claims. we wouldn't have packed truckstops waiting to haul a load somewhere.
12 years ago you could stop anywhere in the middle of the night and find a spot.
today you can't even stop at 10 in the morning and find a place to park. unless your in a busy freight area.
go into dallas or phoenix and forget parking unless you want to pay across the street.Working Class Patriot Thanks this. -
That would explain low cpm as ralph said. I'm new to all this and I think being a trucker is one of the lowest paying jobs. If you are on the road you are working 24 hrs., doesn't matter if you drove for 11 hrs. and doing nothing after that. You are still tied to your truck and most likely no where to go and your choices of doing something are extremely limited.
Just my 02 cents.Guntoter Thanks this. -
Job hopping drivers create an illusion of a shortage that is not as large as it really is. When the majority of baby boomers start their mass retirements, there will indeed be a shortage.

There is a huge shortage of truck drivers. We have an excess of truck herders aka steering wheel holders, seat meat or whatever else you want to call them.

There is a driver shortage real or imagined. The industry as a whole has continued to step on their own d***ks. They all post these ads in the various publications and on TV about what a great job it is and how you can see the USA. Well certainly you can see the USA as long as you dont mind seeing it thru a piece of glass at 60 some mile per hr.
A large part of the shortage is the number of new drivers coming into the industry that believe the propaganda that the companies and their recruiters feed them. Once they get out into the industry they come to the sudden realization that this is a job. It requires skill, knowledge and the willingness to sacrifice in order to earn a living.
Shame on the entire industry as a whole, not one individual company or recruiter. It is the industry as a whole. -
it's not really a job. it's a life.
and the life that you've known and loved. is now changed. to where you DON'T have a life anymore.razor1983 Thanks this. -
There is a shortage of drivers especially at the mega-carriers in which they don't value their drivers and are just looking to keep their seats warm. Another reason why you only hear about the top 5 mega's hiring is because they are the ones spending millions of dollars in advertising to get you to work for them! Finally, the other reason you only hear about the mega-carriers is because while you are attending school the recruiters are getting paid to send you to them. Therefore the only companies they mention are the ones that are paying them to do so.
Want a good driving job? Stay away from the mega-carriers!ralph Thanks this.
