Ok so I've got my cdl a permit on my own and had a friend that use to do car hauls that was going to let me use his truck to take my test. That has fell through so I'm thinking of going to cdl school to get my license and experience. My question is what carriers will pay for your school with the shortest contract for me to stay with them. Does any offer paid cdl training?

    Chinatown Thanks this.

I think the majority of the ones that do school reimbursement require you to stay with them for at least a year.

DO NOT FOR ANY REASON ATTEND SCHOOL AT OR PAID FOR BY A CARRIER/COMPANY!

There are a number of threads on here that address many of the down falls attending these types of school and the horror stories of their first year of driving under those contracts. So will not address them, instead I will point out the benefits of attending school else where.

    1. Most accredited schools will offer FASFA, and/or alternative financing. Also you qualify funding and/or free from your state labor agency. I was unemployed and they paid for half my tuition.
    2. Most offer lifetime job placement.
    3. Most have you pre-hired before you are done with training
    4. You will be free to work for who ever you want and come & leave whenever you want
    5. Most schools will train you on all types of equipment, vs. a refer or van company will only train you on that type of equipment.
    6. You will receive all the tax credits instead of the company for your tuition, housing, meals, cost of medical exam, transportation, notebooks, pens, the purchase of a laptop/computer, purchase of a printer, paper, ink, permitting fees, etc...
    7. Normally you start at a higher CPM then those drivers that attended the carriers school.
    8. Most OTR carriers have tuition reimbursement which you receive without any contract and can be as much as $10,000.

When you are at school you may even decide to change your mind of what type of driving you might like to do. Instead of hauling dry van you might want to drive refer, flatbed, tanker, house hold, container, car carrier, etc..

I'LL tell you the same exact thing I have told my son. Go to Dootson truck driving school you an pay for the time you need to finish your license more than likely under 1K, Then you will be sent out with a trainer but CRST for instance will not ding you for a dime in fact will pay you back, no lenght of stay requirement at all.....

I sorry I should have mentioned.

If you happen to live in an area which doesn't have school near by there are some schools that offer housing or you can rent near the school. Either way housing is covered by FASFA and can be deducted from your taxes at the end of the year.

There is an excellent school in the south Jacksonville, FL area in which offers housing that my brother attended and in which I have trained a lot drivers OTR from that school as well and they are normally much better trained and practiced than drivers from other schools that I have worked with.

According to the rules of this web site I'm not sure if I'm allowed to name the school but if you look under "Truck Driving Schools" on this web site they are listed as a heavy equipment training school in the southern part of the Jacksonville, FL area.

My brother had a job when he decided to attend this school and they had a distance learning program which meant they would send him a chapter to study at home and when he felt ready he would do a timed open book test on-line. This allowed him to continue working while attending school. When he finished the book part of the course he went and took his permit test and scheduled a start date to come to the Jacksonville area to do his yard and road work. While he was there he stayed a local hotel where he shared a room with one other student and the hotel provided free breakfast and discounted dinners to the students. He was allowed to stay a max. of 6 weeks and a min. of 2 weeks. Six days a week the yard was open 6 AM to 11 PM and you had to be there at least 2 hours 4 days a week. My brother said he use to catch the first shuttle to the yard and the last shuttle back everyday and he passed his test the first time right on the two week mark and he was on a bus to his first driving job the same day.

Every time I have a trainee from this school I have always picked them up at the school's yard. The school loves it when trucking companies do that and so do the students and the trainee. Then I have them at HQ in time for orientation and once their done with that we are back on the road making money. The trainee isn't allowed to drive until after orientation but its a hell of a lot better than sitting on a bus a couple of days.

read this thread about Prime INC if you want to know about them...

    http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...27-new-prime-inc-what-expect-springfield.html

Free hotel while at orientation, as well as meals for the week. More than that, but you are going to have to read the thread :biggrin_25525:
