I say at least pay salary. I like the way ShipEx pays its drivers. More OTR companies should follow.

This is great but you and your company are the exception. You are a decent person. You have a small company. This won’t work across the board, especially in these large companies. And not every small company is run efficiently by decent people. But good on you to try it out and see positive results. I imagine you throughly go through a drivers application before you hire anyone on.

You also have a specialized company that most likely attracts a different type of driver. That also makes a difference.

Not really, but truth is we are kind of a specialized carrier in a niche market and we are a small company, only 7 trucks, also, we don't, or VERY seldom advertise, I would much rather hire a guy with a recommendation from one of my drivers. Also I WILL give you the good with the bad, aside from what is required by law, i.e. W-2, Worker Comp ins, etc, we offer NO health care benefits, and I DO understand that a lot of people need benefits, but I simply can't afford to pay what we do AND offer Benefits. Also, a LOT of the benefit packages are scams plain in simple, some of these drivers with benefits are literally paying for all or most of their own benefits out of their weekly and don't even realize that the company really isn't contributing that much, before we went to hourly we had a discussion about more money or better benefits, my guys all wanted the money, I have a lot of ex military in my fleet, or guys that have wife's that are nurses or have plans that are superior than what we could offer.

Thx I appreciate that, but most of it is just common sense and what I as a DRIVER would want to see if I worked elsewhere, I FULLY believe that is the biggest issue today in trucking, FAR too many people in their glass offices have no real insight into what a driver has to deal with on a daily basis.

This post wasn't made to make us sound good, or smart, or get a pat on the back, it really is all just business, and I truly believe that if you treat you business partners (drivers) like family, they will do what they can for you?

I agree. I’ve followed you for a long time. Was always impressed with your operation and your demeanor as a driver/owner.

You will either get one (High Wages) or two (Great Benefits) or you will get a little of both, "IF" you find a job that pays exceptionally well, and has the best "COMPANY" paid benefits with NO MONEY out of your pocket, stay there and keep your mouth shut, because it IS the exception, it all goes back to what I said earlier, a company can not pay out more than it takes in, simple.

Personally, I think Salary would invite more of the clock burner mindset that Dan was talking about than even hourly, even thou we pay hourly there is still a CLEAR trail to what a guy gets paid, hours worked, BOL's turned in, and we track EVERYTHING, it really is amazing to me sometimes just how close the numbers are for most of the guys regardless of their runs, drops, pickups down time etc, you can read it like a book.

They don’t want to pay you by the hour because, even at minimum wage, most companies would have to pay you more. Many O/Os get paid on a percentage of the load. If you really want to get paid well get your own truck.
