Yeah, a health related major is a huge +. Many entry-level hospital jobs start at around $17-18/hr (here in Boston anyway) and RN's can make $55+/hr.

I've saved up about $70,000 right now though.
Basically sick and tired of chinese restaurants.

It is usually helpful to have a job while in college. Some majors offer internships, especially in the business fields. If you can find something part time in your area of study, while in college, all the better. The economy will turn around. We are just in a down cycle. There are some college students who have never held a job. Those are the ones who will likely find the job hunting more difficult. Many internships turn into permanent jobs after graduation. Internships are usually unpaid positions, but can give some practical experience and insight into a potential career.

Your career services center at your university should be able to help you find something. When the economy is down, a degree may not help much. But, when the economy turns around then it can be helpful.

I did the college thing. I don't have a degree but probably wouldn't use it if I had one. I sometimes wonder if I would like to be in a tall building over looking the city with I high back leather chair and a sexy secretary at my beckon call but I like the stress free trucking life. The money is good too.

No one else has mentioned it so I will. Joining the military will give you the opportunity to learn a technical skill and you will have experience when you leave. They will also pay a big portion of your college expenses. Employers love ex-military types because of your training and experience. I know the nay sayers will comment about combat but there are many specialties that will not require it. If you can get USAF or Army training in UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) do it as this is becoming a new age specialty and the civilian market pays big bucks for this experience. It's not for everyone but military training can pay off as good as or better than some degrees.

Joetro, U4EA and Logan76 Thank this.

I think the military is a good option for anyone.
I also think that everyone should do 2 years in the service before they can go to College. That way they will have a chance to mature and get to know themselves before they waste thousands of mom and dads money.
Plus that would be 2 years away from mom and dad, where they could not claim you as a Dependant. So you would be an independent student, and the income of your parents would not effect the chance you have of grants and loans.
This would keep most students loan debt to a minimum. Or have 0 debt from college.
If military is not an option for someone, then some kind of public help job would be acceptable as well.

i didn't give mentioning the military any thought because the o/p is NOT an ex-con or habitual unemployed deadbeat person...or a very young person (18 or so)......

he's got himself "some education"......so he should do quite well.
