    Hi my name is Dakota and i am 20. My dad is a OTR Driver of 15+ years. I have spent countless summers out on the trk with him. I have been considering Trucking since i was 18 if i should get into this industry.But since i moved out at 18 and got married. I have seen the price that my whole family pays for dad not being home before i left home and after. My Dad's friend gave my wife and I an idea to pursue this lifestyle for a short term basis. I have been searching Truck driving schools and companies etc... I just wanna get some insight on what i should do other then dad saying " i want to train you " and all the annoying things i keep hearing. I haven't been in the trk for 5 years. since i got with my wife, he assumes that she is the reason i don't go out with him. which it is not. I am 6"2 he is 6"5 1/2. i don't think two men can be in a small 13 ft trk. Not to mention i don't want him changing jobs because he wants to train me to a company that allows him to become a trainer.

    What should i do?

    Thanks in advance.:biggrin_25521::biggrin_2558:

    If you don't even have confidence in yourself becoming a professional driver what makes you think anything we say will sway your decision?

    We generally get jobs because we either:
    A. Love what we do
    B. Get paid super well
    C. Are super good at what we do
    D. Just plain & simple need money

    If you feel like your going to like your job then for sure become an OTR driver - If you feel there will be stress on your family find another job OR just find a city trucking job.

    what does your wife think?do you have kids? It seems like you have an idea of what you would be getting yourself into, the question is are you commited to the journey? The reason being going to be at least two months before you start making any money. Something to think about

    Well, for one thing YOU have to be the one to decide "what you should do." You and your spouse need to be of the same mind on this, or you're gonna have a tough road.

    I can understand your not wanting to have your dad train you. Yeah, there are a few father/son teams that work. But for the most part it just isn't a good idea. You think of yourself as a man, but your dad still thinks your a kid. (Which at 20 you actually are, but that is neither here nor there.)

    IMHO you should go ahead and go to a driving school once you are old enough. You may have better luck at 23 than at 20 due to insurance requirements that most companies have.

    There is no "textbook" answer for your question, as everyone has a different personality, and a different situation.

    I do believe you will need to grow a bit of a thicker skin if what has been posted here bothers you. It's just the way life is.

    If you drive or not is an answer only you can make. You already know the ins and outs of driving so you're more knowledgeable than a lot of others. Companies want to see that you went to school to get your CDL so I would recommend that. However, I believe your father is most likely a better source for driving information so what I think you should do is go to school to get your CDL then to your Dad to learn how to drive.
