Should I be afraid of an ISX?

I'm looking at adding a truck to my operation. It seems that most everything in my area from 2005 to 2009 that's for sale has an ISX in it. I'm a Cat guy and after reading as much as I can find about those red things they scare me. I looked at some 08 - 09 Cats but they scare me worse. Local Freightshaker dealer is pretty useless when it comes to used trucks.

I know that the ISXs have EGR valve, EGR cooler and turbo problems. EGR is simple to disable. When turbo goes bad you upgrade it to aftermarket. What I don't know is how long a decently maintained ISX engine will last before needing an overhaul? I've heard that ISX overhauls are very expensive, though they can't be much more than an $18,000 - $20,000 Cat O/H. Any other faults with them? I had a friend tell me that cams go out at 700- 800K? There is a very clean and well maintained 2007 KW available for the right price but it has 826K on it. If oil samples come back ok I'd like to have an idea of how many miles I have to save for an O/H.

I know that there is no answer to this question, but there is experience that can be shared.

I have driven Volvo trucks with the isx engine in them for 2 years now. I have had problems mostly related to the regen/emissions system.I have had the egr cooler replaced 3 times - 1 on one truck and 2 on another. My current truck is in the shop with a camshaft failure with 550,000 on the clock. I would not recommend them but then again I dont really know what I would recommend. I did have somewhat good luck back in 09 with the detroit dd15. I hope this helps.

Anymore it just seems like a flip the coin and take your chances on the newer engines. You have a 50/50 chance of getting something decent, or losing your shirt. The game has changed.

Does it have DPF ? Early 07s don't. If you read the forums , you can get a better idea , what you're looking at.
My truck is an 06 KW , with an ISX. I bought it at 565,000 miles , from Paccar. It Was a 400 , with a 9-speed , 3.55 rears . Only history Cummins had on it , was a head gasket.
Paccar turned it to a 500, did a pretty complete job of it , from what I could see , in INSITE . They also added the box , to make it a 13 speed. Worked out very well , for me .
I had a problem with it , as you can read about in these forums , but got it solved .
It has 856,000 on it now.
Unplug the EGR correctly , as I was advised to do , as soon as I bought it , and you should do well , If the EGR is , in fact , working correctly now. And , if its Not a DPF engine , though that can be solved , too.
They are a good engine , at least mine has been . I ran the old N14s , back in the 70's , so I liked them from then.
I ran an 07 Cat , new , to about 400,000 miles , 550 HP . Ran great at first , but the owner couldn't put the money into it that it needed. Wiring harness to the head. First time , Cat warranted it . After that , ur on your own. I used to love CATs . It's sitting now , owner is looking to get rid of it , cause it has a major engine problem. No warranty.
Do your homework , check with Cummins . Get its history. They can , like all the others , be really good , or really bad.
I think the ISX can be a darn good choice . First 2 years I've had with this one , were mostly trouble free . I spent a lot of money on it , the last 60 days , cause I forgot to follow the simple rule : KISS .
A problem that cost $60.00 to fix , I spent over $4000.00 on. But , I got 'er fixed , and the sweet sound of that turbo , singing its song , is music to my ears.
    Good Luck.

Thanks for the 411. I'm going to take the SN to Cummins and ask for records and get oil samples run.
