Smartphone is the best answer . Ask the recruiter if they require one and what the requirements are .

you won't need a laptop when you have a smartphone. if you want a bigger screen. buy a tablet. radio shack has 7 inches for $80. install firefox for web browsing and your golden. the stock browser stalls too much. but so does my note2 phone i just bought.

don't buy the streets and trips. copilot works great for $3. if you want to see the destination. google maps is free.

i dont' know why everyone is so concerned about look at there destination before making delivery. cuz you have to make your delivery no matter what. no getting around it. and chances are. your going to be sitting for awhile. so why worry about what it looks like. you'll see when you get there. ROFL.

I brought mine. Bring anything you want as long as it fits in two small/medium bags.

I had a nice trainer that gave me half the storage in the truck. My friend got a trainer that gave him none. He had to sleep on the narrow top bunk with the three bags he brought!

One other thing to consider.....when training, you might switch trucks, or, head for a motel for the night. There could be times all your stuff will be stacked in the corner while you're waiting for a different trainer. As an example, you check out of the motel at 9 am, haul all your stuff back to the terminal where your new trainer is scheduled to pick you up at 4 pm. So, all your stuff is sitting in the lounge in the corner while you hang around the terminal watching movies, talking with other drivers, eating junk from the vending machines, calling wifey on your cell phone etc. You can't "babysit" your possessions constantly, you might even doze off in the lounge if your trainer is late. You don't want valuables un-attended, YOUR valuables.

leave your birth certificate and social security card at home. if you think canada is a possibility, then bring the passport.

Yes, valuables. Especially if someone sees you using it then you box it up and take your eyes off it for a moment. Like to use the washroom.

I have personal article insurance from state farm for my expensive items. Laptops, cameras etc... It even covers accidental damage.

I would say bring it, it is no different than a woman carrying a purse, just make sure you have the mindset of where you are, it is also. I too don't like trying to map anything on a phone, it is too small and takes too long usually. It can be carried on buses and planes as a carry on. If you can find an old style duffel bag from an Army/Navy surplus that is great, just make sure whatever folds down flat later on. The terminal at Springfield has a Walmart close enough to walk to if you decide to buy some of the items you need after getting there, such as bedding for the training truck. You won't need sheets or pillows at the Campus Inn.

You will need your birth certificate and social security card (make sure it is not laminated) I believe to apply for the TWIC card also. If you don't have your passport already, then they will be needed for it. The passport will keep the copy of birth certificate and mail it back to you under separate cover once the passport has been issued, it may take 4 wks or more for you to get this back. You will also need W2's for the last 2yrs, plus current year tax filing.

Speaking as a trainer I usually have no problems with an extra bag or two. When we drive we keep his stuff on the top bunk with the net over it and when we sleep it all gets stacked in the passenger seat. I have never had a problem this way. Just takes a little accommodation and consideration.
