I can think of only a handful of reasons to get my own BRAND NEW trailer at the moment, and a whole list of reasons not to.

    That’s a good idea.
Dave could lease the other trailer to Landstar.

If anything trailers don’t seem to depreciate much. You could always sell after a year if you didn’t like your decision

We pickup new van trailers from all of the manufacturers and move used vans around for all of the major leasing/trucking companies. I know of very few companies that do any serious PM on their trailer fleets, totally hit or miss unless their loads go out and back and they have a safety lane they run the trailer through AND actually fix stuff instead of deferring the maintenance because of budget.
The higher the percentage of spotted trailers, the worse it becomes. Even relatively conscientious drivers don't take care of the company trailer behind them. Don't get me started on the others.
The things would last forever with some timely maintenance, and some reasonable care in use. You can do that and realize the profit. If you can put up with the limitations of live loading I would say do it. I would even consider buying a unit that have a few choice options if you intend to make this a long term investment.

Trailers take a pounding. The shippers and receivers beat the F out of them.

The places I go, I have to curb the tandems on ocassion.

I've seen some that just seem to burn through tires.

I could see the investment in a really nice one if you had a few select customers, that you could get into and out of, and that didn't thrash on it while being loaded and unloaded.

I think a used one that us structurally sound would be better.

Get wrench to put new seals, cans, and brakes on it, and off you go.

    Maybe you should.
    Maybe you should not.

    Outstanding point.

All of life is just like poker. Easy decisions. If you need to talk yourself into it, it's probably a bad choice.
