Should I expect more from a professional driver?

Yes, of course, you can use it ... the origional authors have been dead a long time ... having committed suicide after being called in on and losing their jobs. And you are absolutely correct about striving for perfection being a long journey which can never be achieved. Last time I looked, the only perfect person is God ... and the definition of the word Holy is perfect. I don't think the origional poster is either

After spending a couple years driving a delivery van a couple thousand miles a week, I have a lot of experience on driving around traffic, trucks, crazies, texters, road ragers, I have seen it all. The most common thing I've seen trucks do is cut cars off when passing other trucks. I swear half of them do it on purpose, I'll be cruising along 75-80 in the fast lane see a truck ahead getting closer to another truck think to myself well he's not signaling or I would let him go and keep going, then bam here he comes hits the signal as he's cutting the wheel and I'm slamming on the brakes. Now I gotta wait half an hour for a truck that's governed at 63 to pass a truck that's governed at 62 and here comes a hill.

The thing is traffic is predictable when you study it long enough, you learn to predict what drivers are going to do based on the traits you recognize. Makes it a lot easier to negotiate situations and stay out of trouble.

Yes we all were in grade school once. I'd like to think most of us have grown up some tho. If I see someone committing a crime, I'm calling the law. Does that make me a snitch? Sure. And I'm totally ok with that. Willing to bet that every one in my social group is also.
What the op described isn't much different. He made a judgement call. Nothing wrong with that. Might not of been the right one, but also may have been. We weren't there and only have a tidbit of info to go by.

I was thinking about this thread as I was driving tonight. The thought occurred to me that if we don't police ourselves, then we only have ourselves to blame for the bad image trucking has with the general public. Would I report a trucker that dumps piss bottles and several large bags of garbage in a Walmart parking lot? Absolutely.

How about a trucker that is flipping off a car while tail gating within 5 feet of the car's bumper while aggressively weaving through traffic? Probably so if I have a hands free phone.

The idea that we should all MYOB might be a good rule of the playground, but perhaps we are at a level of responsibility that is a tad more important than whether Tommy is shooting spit wads. Out here on the road a trucker that is out of emotional control is a hazard that can end up getting folks killed. Truckers that leave garbage in parking lots with biohazard content are shutting down parking lots we should all be able to enjoy. I'll let the small things go, but if the behavior is egregious and/or dangerous or criminal then it is another matter.

Well of course if it's dangerous criminal behavior it should be reported. What the OP described didn't appear to be even close.

You're not a driver yet but sounding off about things you don't like about truck drivers........hmmmm. If/when you get out here driving one of these things around, you'll have much more to be concerned about then the large car drivers out here with no respect for anyone......trust me on this one.

Professionalism in the industry is very welcome, you come in, do a good job, share the road, there are many of us who will appreciate it.

However being a self appointed hall monitor is not. If you decide to call everyone's company every time you see them do something dumb, you had best have unlimited minutes on your phone.

I will tell you this, the call you made to the company about their flat bed driver, they told you what you wanted to hear, hung up the phone and more than likely never even said anything to the driver, if they did it was "hey someone called and said you were blocking up traffic" that was it. You wasted your time.

I have a relative that works in human resources where she works. She said that ever now and then someone will call and try to get someone in trouble. Such as, so and so was drinking before coming into work. Or any other kind of lie. She just ignores those kind of calls.

Here's the thing, what is the difference between a professional athlete and amateur? or a pro race car driver and amateur? how about a professional chef and an amateur? the list goes on and on.
the only difference between a professional and a amateur is the pro gets paid. period. I realize that to many people the word professional means some one trained to a higher degree or standard, but the simple truth is the word simply means to get paid for engaging in any activity as opposed to doing it for free.
