I was taught in truck driving school:::That it is the persons JOB that is getting on the highway to merge, and that I should not move over.

So every time I see a big truck getting over to accommodate the likes of a four wheeler, "Especially when he/she doesn't even need to", I always think they're in their first week; but am I right? or are seasoned drivers doing this too?

You know I'm always trying to get people to look at my blogs and stuff; but I don't care this time, I really want to know who's doing that, and more importantly WHY??? and yes I know about the "one" state that has it as their law.

Check out the red and white triangle on the on ramps the next time you are out driving. That should answer your question. It's a courtesy to move over but should only be done if it's safe. States used to put those triangles on every on ramp but cost cutting measures have probably stopped them but the rule is still the same. YIELD! Means the traffic entering the highway gives the right-of-way to vehicles already in the lanes. Doesn't mean speed up(trucks do it to) doesn't mean race to the end of the ramp(trucks do it to). It means traffic on the highway has the right-of-way. In most cases this is what happens when you don't move over.:biggrin_25516:

I'm curious if the school taught you to NEVER move over or just not when it cannot be done safely? I do move over when it is safe and only then. Why not move over? Sadly, most of what is taught in schools is useless.

My instructor taught me that it is their job to get in the lane: they should either speed up and get out front WITHOUT getting in the way, as they do so often: or slow down and fall back,

My practice became: if there are multiple vehicle getting on the highway, I'll accommodate "if safe", if there is one of anything getting on the highway, I maintain, don't break cruise and hope they do they're job, if they get stupid; as some time they do, I make sure I do what I have to to keep it safe.

This way I train my instinct to stay in the lane, which is probably the safest and most practical way to get down the road without jumping over every time I see somebody gittin on :biggrin_25511:.......Jo Bernard

Some trucking companies actually have a policy that states :

You do NOT move over for merging traffic !!!!!!!!!!!

I've been driving for longer than I like to admit and I've always moved over whenever possible, and I always appreciate a driver ( 4 or 18 wheeler ) moving over to let me out. Texas used to have roadsigns that read "drive friendly", I think that pretty well says it all.

Hubby moves over when its safe to do so and there are multiple cars or an 18 wheeler trying to merge onto the road. Otherwise, he stays in the granny lane.

There are many 4 wheelers out there that do not understand that the yield sign means anymore. And I've seen it put my husband in some really bad positions. Common courtesy is gone.

Yeah, but some people when getting on the highway should be measuring if they should speed up or slow down: but what are they doing? eating, smoking, putting on make up, or just in a general state of obliviousness; and then get to the end of the ramp, look up, and if you don't accommodate them, their pissed.

Why? all because they didn't do "THEIR" job.

I disagree with the last statement. If a lane change can be done SAFELY then I think it's safer to change. By not changing lanes you put yourself at risk that the other driver will not do what they should do.

Remember, Lane Changes are one of the top causes for accidents in big trucks !!!!!!!!!
