Dealer is a mistake for emissions issues.

You have a Cummins? Take it to Cummins.
    Detroit? Take it to Detroit.

There's a lot of diagnostics that goes into it.

Then the ecm also has to be calibrated for your new parts(s).

Lastly they will check to see if something upstream (engine issue) is causing the after treatment problems.

    Don't go to a dealer.

And if you're in the 700K to 800K mile range, you probably need the SCR replaced and other items if it's a Cummins.

    OneBox if Detroit.

I took mine to Cummins. Dude plugs a gizmo into the truck port. Reads the codes on his phone.

This is a pro. He knew what those codes were in an instant.

He's like,"It's gonna cost you some money. "

But they did a great job.

I have 487K on my truck. Is it too early to replace the SCR?

    Rideandrepair Thanks this.

Unknown. Seems a bit soon to me. Take it to Cummins. Let them run the diagnostics on it. You'll be many, many dollars ahead.

    Rideandrepair and kameleon Thank this.

The dude that actually fixed mine has been at that Cummins for 33 years.

The service writer was a wrench for 18 years.

    Cummins in Tolleson Arizona.

I went back to the shop today and immediately told the foreman I wanted to talk to his supervisor and he freaked out. I explained to him I was a new owner operator and I was going through a rough patch and he said he'd do whatever it took to make things right and apologized for not fixing the truck the first time. So I hope they get it right tomorrow, if they can't do it then I'll have to go to Cummins

    Many parts don’t require calibration.

Cummins had mine for almost a week. It's a pretty sophisticated tune process. So I don't see how someone could do that properly in a day.

It's a live and learn thing.

Trucking is the toughest easy job there is, especially when you're honest.
